IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In many countries there are many students who are preferring other courses over science in universities and there are many causes related to it. Firstly, in most of the underdeveloping countries there is not a huge job market for students to explore after doing their graduation, there is a shortage of industries and factories in these countries and if you studied science as your major so you have to do job related to engineering, IT etc, and these countries clearly have no resources to have factories or industries so students go for the other courses rather than doing science.
There is another cause that if somehow a student persue science as majors in university then he has to relocate to other country for job and not everybody can afford to leave their country and move to other country so they prefer doing jobs in their own country.
For example, when I was taking admission in university I only considered doing bachelor's in science because I thought I will get a job easily and after graduating when I see my friends who have done Accounting or BBA getting job and I am jobless I was so disappointed.
Another and important reason is that many students thinks that studying science is very difficult and you have to get good grades in order to stay in university, You have to study hard and some students wants their university life to be relaxed and enjoyable.
For example, my brother got a good grades in college in he was eligible to do science in university but he chooses to do media marketing because firstly it was his interest, Secondly he wanted to be his study life less stressful and there was a good job market in our country for media.
If we talk about what effects does it have on society, I think the obvious one is not expecting any factory or industry related to science and technology to establish in these countries also not expecting these countries to produce scientists, engineers and IT experts. These countries should have to rely on other developing countries to give them Technology and that will also effect these countries financial condition.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt by discussing the causes of fewer students choosing science and the effects this has on society. The ideas are relevant and supported by personal experience, such as the mention of friends studying Accounting or BBA and the example of the student's brother. However, the development of ideas tends to be repetitive and overly anecdotal. While a clear position is presented, the explanation of societal effects in the final paragraph is brief and lacks deeper exploration. It aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor because it addresses all parts of the task, though some aspects, particularly the societal consequences, are somewhat under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement, but there are significant weaknesses in paragraphing and mechanical cohesion. The entire body of the essay is presented as a series of run-on thoughts with long, convoluted sentences connected primarily by coordinating conjunctions like 'and' or 'so', rather than effective segmentation. For instance, the second paragraph spans almost half the page without a proper structural break. Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are overused in a repetitive manner (e.g., repeating phrases like 'there is another cause' and 'for example'). This level of logical flow and cohesive management sits comfortably within Band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully communicating everyday academic and personal concepts. Words like 'relocate', 'disappointed', and 'eligibile' are used appropriately. However, there are notable limitations and word choice inaccuracies, such as 'underdeveloping' instead of 'developing', 'persue' instead of 'pursue', and 'study life' instead of 'student life' or 'university experience'. Vocabulary is sometimes repetitive, and the attempt to use less common items is occasionally hindered by imprecise collocations. These issues correspond to a Band 5 performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is inconsistent. Many sentences are extremely long and run-on, characterized by comma splices and run-together clauses (e.g., '...if you studied science as your major so you have to do job related to engineering...'). Grammatical errors are frequent, including tense inconsistencies ('got a good grades', 'chooses to do'), preposition errors, and missing articles. These errors can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, though meaning is generally retrievable. This profile aligns with the Band 5 descriptors.
