Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying causes such as fear of difficulty and misconceptions about science, as well as societal effects including technological advancement and economic development. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on causes relies heavily on general statements like 'fear is the main reason' without deep exploration of systemic educational factors. The position is clear, but the support tends to over-generalize, such as claiming 'science is only the subjects where we can imagine every things.' While all requirements are met, the depth of extension places this firmly in the Band 6 territory, where relevant ideas are presented but remain under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay has a recognizable overall structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, satisfying basic coherence requirements. Paragraphing is attempted, though the second body paragraph is quite dense and covers multiple loosely linked points ranging from AI to weapons for self-defense. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes mechanical (e.g., 'This essay will discuss...', 'For example...', 'In conclusion'). Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'that's why they don't choose science,' where the antecedent is broad. Overall progression is somewhat disjointed, and the mechanical handling of cohesion points to a Band 5.5 or Band 6 descriptor; it leans slightly more toward Band 6 due to logical layout, but has notable flaws in internal paragraph cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'misconception,' 'technological advancement,' and 'economic development' (though some are affected by spelling errors). However, there are frequent spelling mistakes throughout the text, such as 'proplems' for problems, 'belived' for believed, 'implimented' for implemented, 'intresting' for interesting, 'go' for far, and 'Wepons' for weapons. These spelling errors and occasional awkward word choices (e.g., 'Science have gone too for') prevent the response from achieving a higher band. The lexical range is minimally sufficient to convey the message, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptors well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure (e.g., conditional structures like 'So, if we are able to imagine things...'). However, there are numerous grammatical errors that affect accuracy, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the effect it have,' 'there is enough science students'), preposition errors ('related to science' instead of 'about science'), and awkward phrasing. While the errors do not completely impede communication, their frequency means that error-free sentences are not in the majority, which aligns closely with the Band 5 descriptors where frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader.
