Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the prompt by identifying both the causes of why fewer students choose science and the resulting effects on society. The position is clear throughout the response, and ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as mentioning specific subjects like physics, chemistry, and biology, and discussing the impact on research, healthcare, and the economy. However, there is a tendency to over-generalize in places, and some ideas lack deeper elaboration. For instance, the discussion on financial barriers could be developed further with more specific examples. Overall, the task is adequately fulfilled, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The text displays a clear overall arrangement with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing causes and effects separately, and a brief conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the essay. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, such as the repetitive use of transitions like 'Furthermore' and 'Additionally.' Referencing is also occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'this issue create certain difficulties.' While the logical progression is generally maintained, the frequent cohesive errors and mechanical linking push this criterion firmly into the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range, warranting a score of 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'analytical skills,' 'technical knowledge,' and 'financial development.' However, there are numerous noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'Nowadys,' 'streem' for stream, 'prefere,' 'carrer,' 'socitey,' 'enviorment,' and 'techanology.' These errors do not severely impede communication because the overall meaning remains clear, but they highlight limitations in control and accuracy. This performance corresponds to a Band 5.5 or 6.0, and given the frequency of basic spelling mistakes, a Band 5.5 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('sufficient number of students are not studying... has become,' 'This all subjects required,' 'this issue create,' 'It can lead to... contries may have... the storage has occured'). Punctuation and article usage are also problematic in several sentences. While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, they cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from reaching a higher band. These characteristics best reflect the Band 5 descriptors.
