IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Countries around the world are observing decline in the number of students enrolling for studying science at the university, which is why I believe it is necessary to understand the cause of this occurance as well as what implications it will have in the future.

Studying science, itself is a much tougher choice for students, the complexity of the subject is not what students find easy to grasp, this was noted in many known university review forms. Apart from this, the annual fees are much higher in numbers when compared to other options like commerce or arts. There is also a lack of knowledge and the stereotype that in the future, science would lead you to having the choice of becoming a doctor or a scientist only. People have a pre conceived notion that studying science would only lead to jobs that are underpaid for instance, nursing or healthcare providing job roles.

The long term effects that this would imply on our society would be very harsh. The research gap that would occur in a country's developmental rate, due to the lack of youth not choosing science, can be detrimental. The alarming number of decline in the count of doctors available would eventually harm the qyality of healthcare facilities of that country. It would simultaneously also reduce the IQ levels of an entire population as there would be lack of awareness when it comes to basic knowledge like family planning, spread and managemet of diseases, etc.

In conclusion, it is crucial that students don't let the future generations pay the price of their choices today, students who are genuinely interested and have the opportunity to choose studying science should therefore not take it lightly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both causes (complexity, higher fees, and career stereotypes) and effects (research gaps, healthcare decline, and societal awareness). The student establishes a clear position in the introduction and maintains it throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant explanations, such as the perceived limitation that science only leads to nursing or medicine. While some arguments could benefit from further depth, the overall coverage aligns well with the Band 7 descriptor for addressing all parts with a clear position and supported ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information and ideas are grouped into appropriate paragraphs, moving logically from introduction to causes, effects, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Apart from this' and 'In conclusion'. However, there are some minor mechanical or repetitive elements in referencing, such as the repetitive sentence structures linking ideas within paragraphs. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, supporting a clear overall progression. These features place the response solidly at Band 6.5 to 7.0, matching the criteria for logical organization.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'implications', 'detrimental', 'pre conceived notion', and 'developmental rate'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'occurance' instead of 'occurrence', 'qyality' instead of 'quality', 'managemet' instead of 'management', and awkward phrasing like 'healthcare providing job roles'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, communication is not impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey precise meanings, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer attempts complex structures, such as relative clauses and conditional-style projections ('The research gap that would occur... can be detrimental'). However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors, including comma splices and run-on structures (e.g., 'Studying science, itself is a much tougher choice for students, the complexity of the subject is not what students find easy to grasp...'). Articles are also occasionally misused, as in 'observing decline'. Because these errors persist and require some re-reading, the grammar aligns with Band 6.
