Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying causes such as the complexity and time-consuming nature of science subjects, and effects such as a lack of professionals and the subsequent economic cost of hiring foreign experts. However, the development of ideas is limited and somewhat repetitive. For instance, the statement 'Because they found it more difficult and time consuming' is a sentence fragment that fails to fully explain the underlying causes. Furthermore, the position is somewhat unclear due to weak formulation, such as 'In my opinion, I think students found it difficult'. While the ideas are relevant, they tend to be under-developed and lack extension with concrete, specific examples beyond broad generalisations. Overall, the response meets the basic requirements for addressing the task, but lacks the depth and fully supported arguments needed for a higher band. Therefore, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is divided into four paragraphs, showing a basic attempt at overall organisation with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the transitions between ideas can be abrupt or mechanical. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately at times, such as 'In result the lack of professionals' and 'By this process, The huge amount of country wealth'. Additionally, referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly with pronouns like 'they' and 'these' where antecedents are occasionally ambiguous. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within the body paragraphs is faulty, leading to a disjointed reading experience. These features align closely with the band 5 descriptors for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, with common words like 'students', 'university', 'subjects', and 'government'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'comlex' instead of complex, 'studing' instead of studying, 'feilds' instead of fields, and 'douths' instead of doubts. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are sparse and often inaccurate, such as 'vast scope' and 'country wealth'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling mistakes cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the lexical score to a band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex or compound sentences are frequently faulty, such as the sentence fragment 'Because they found it more difficult and time consuming.' There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and article usage, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'Other feilds also has a vast scope' and 'it also effects on the society', as well as incorrect verb forms such as 'did not take interest'. Punctuation errors are also notable, such as starting a sentence with 'For instance, In result...'. These persistent errors cause difficulty for the reader, fitting the criteria for a band 5.0.
