Student answer (Band 5.5)

Many students in several countries are not applying to study science in universities. There are factors like the cost of education has increased a lot while inflation is getting worse everyday. Furthermore, young individuals are drawn more towards social media in order to become entrepreneure. This leads to shortage of people working in health sector and many other science relevant fields.

The universities are demanding way more fees than before. Many families cannot afford such high education prices and students even if they have passion do not go for science subjects. Moreover, when they get into their field they realize that the return is not enough as many companies exploit young interns and they get depressed. This not only effects the society by lack of professionals but also discourages other childrens and they do not take studying seriously.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address both parts of the prompt, identifying causes such as tuition costs and social media distractions, and effects like a shortage in health and science sectors. However, the essay is significantly under-length at 212 words, which directly impacts the fullness of the response and prevents adequate extension of ideas. While the position is generally clear, the development is limited and abruptly cut off mid-sentence at the end of the text. For instance, the discussion on social media influencers touches on relevant points but lacks depth and complete elaboration. Consequently, this falls under Band 5 due to the incomplete nature of the task completion and the word count penalty.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays some logical organisation with distinct paragraphs attempting to separate causes and effects, though the paragraphs are relatively short and underdeveloped. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'For instance', but their application is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous pronoun use in 'this not only effects the society'. Paragraphing is present, but the abrupt ending disrupts the overall flow of the text. Because there is a discernible structure and progression despite these structural limitations, a Band 6 is awarded.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'entrepreneure', 'exploit', and 'luxary life'. However, there are notable spelling and word choice inaccuracies throughout the text, including 'entrepreneure' (entrepreneurs), 'effects' (affects), 'childrens' (children), and 'luxary' (luxurious). Furthermore, some collocations are awkward, such as 'science relevant fields' instead of 'science-related fields'. Although these errors are noticeable and detract from the precision of the writing, they do not severely impede overall communication, placing the vocabulary firmly at a Band 6 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using conditional and causal clauses like 'students even if they have passion do not go for science subjects' and 'when they get into their field they realize that...'. However, grammatical errors are frequent, particularly with missing articles ('shortage of people working in health sector', 'essential part of the socie'), verb tense inconsistencies, and punctuation oversights. Additionally, sentence boundaries are occasionally blurred by run-on structures. While these errors occur regularly, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the main points, aligning with the descriptors for Band 5.5.
