IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many countries, fewer students are choosing to study science at university. This trend is caused by several factors, and it can have some negative effects on society. This essay will discuss the main causes of this issue and its effects on society.

One major reason is that science subjects are considered difficult by many students. Subjects such as physics, chemistry and mathematics require a lot of practice, calculations and problem-solving skills. Therefore, some students prefer to choose subjects that they find easier and less stressful. Another reason is that students may believe that other fields provide better career opportunities. For example, business, management and information technology can offer attractive jobs and good salaries. As a result, many young people may choose these subjects instead of science.

This situation can have several negative effects on society. First, it may lead to a shortage of qualified scientists, engineers and researchers. These professionals are important for developing new technologies, medicines and other useful products. If fewer students study science, there may not be enough skilled workers in these areas in the future. Second, a lack of science graduates can slow down scientific and technological development. For example, countries may find it more difficult to conduct research and solve problems related to healthcare, climate change and environmental protection.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the task by identifying causes, such as the perceived difficulty of science subjects and better career prospects in other fields, as well as societal effects, including a shortage of qualified professionals and slower technological development. However, the essay is incomplete because it cuts off abruptly mid-sentence in the conclusion ('In conclusion, the'), meaning the final thoughts are unfinished. Furthermore, the length requirement has not been met, as the response contains only 218 words, falling 32 words short of the 250-word minimum. Because of the under-length penalty and the truncated ending, the task is only partially addressed in terms of full development and completion, placing it firmly at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical arrangement of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with a clear introduction, a body paragraph dedicated to causes, and a body paragraph addressing the effects on society. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect ideas, as seen with transitional phrases like 'One major reason', 'Another reason', 'First', and 'Second'. Referencing is generally clear and easy to follow. Although the essay lacks a proper concluding paragraph due to cutting off prematurely, the internal structure and cohesion of the preceding paragraphs are logical and coherent, supporting a Band 6.0 rating.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate and relevant to the task topic. The student successfully employs subject-specific terminology and collocation related to education and science, such as 'problem-solving skills', 'career opportunities', 'qualified scientists', and 'environmental protection'. There are attempts at less common vocabulary, though most words are fairly standard. Word choice and spelling are generally accurate throughout the text, and there are no errors that impede communication. While the range of vocabulary is not wide enough for higher bands, it comfortably meets the criteria for Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response exhibits a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The student successfully constructs multi-clause sentences, such as 'Subjects such as physics, chemistry and mathematics require a lot of practice, calculations and problem-solving skills' and 'If fewer students study science, there may not be enough skilled workers in these areas in the future.' Grammar and punctuation are handled with good control, and errors are virtually absent in the text provided. Because the grammatical structures are reasonably varied and mostly accurate, this criterion achieves a solid Band 6.5.
