Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by identifying both the causes of why fewer students choose science and the effects this has on society. The introduction outlines the essay plan, and both body paragraphs discuss causes and effects, such as employment concerns leading to a shortage of medical professionals like doctors and nurses. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive, with generalized statements rather than fully extended arguments. For instance, the discussion on employment opportunities lacks deep elaboration. Therefore, the response aligns best with Band 6, as it addresses all parts of the task with relevant, though slightly under-developed, ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the main causes', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are utilized to guide the reader through the text. However, referencing and logical progression are occasionally faulty, and transitions can feel slightly mechanical. Additionally, paragraphing is somewhat disrupted by formatting issues in the body text. Cohesion is sometimes repetitive, keeping the response at a Band 5 level overall, where organization is present but progression lacks full clarity.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'employment opportunities', 'workforce', and 'specialist'. However, there are numerous spelling errors throughout the text, including 'sicence' for science, 'cirrulum' for curriculum, 'opportunites' for opportunities, 'excpetional' for exceptional, 'technologist' for technologists, and 'patie' for patients. Furthermore, word choice and collocations are occasionally awkward, such as 'mostly science students are struggle'. These errors do not completely impede communication, placing the lexical resource comfortably at a Band 5 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate structures. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, featuring frequent errors such as subject-verb agreement issues and tense confusion, for example, 'mostly science students are struggle', 'courses are recently introduce', and 'students not considering science because they are concerned'. Punctuation and sentence boundary errors also occur, such as unfinished sentences in the conclusion ('fewer doctors for patie'). While the meaning is generally retrievable, the frequency of grammatical errors places this response at a Band 5.
