Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing the causes of declining interest in science (lack of funds, poor infrastructure, financial concerns) and its societal effects (inability to fight hunger and poverty). The position is generally clear throughout, and relevant ideas are presented. However, some ideas lack full extension and suffer from generalisation. For example, the mention of 'fear of growth' is introduced in the introduction but not clearly elaborated in the body paragraphs. While all parts of the task are addressed, the depth of development aligns most closely with Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, moving from an introduction to causes, effects, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, though some paragraphs are quite brief or contain disparate ideas. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes mechanical or faulty, such as 'In results' instead of 'As a result' and 'By this way'. Referencing and logical progression are occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, placing this criterion at Band 5.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate to the academic topic, including terms like 'infrastructure', 'Search Engine Optimization', and 'biological control'. However, there are numerous noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling, such as 'devast field' instead of 'vast field', 'inludind' instead of 'including', 'laboratries', 'undergarduates', and 'un-availabilty'. These lexical inaccuracies and frequent spelling errors restrict the score to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at varied structures. However, frequent grammatical and punctuation errors occur throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'students from the under developed nations not have access' and conditional structure errors such as 'if this will continue as it is, we definately will be out'. While meaning is usually retrievable, the frequency of errors places the grammar firmly at Band 5.0.
