There is an ongoing debate about whether only a few students choose to learn science at university. This essay will discuss the main problems associated with this issue and its effects on society.

One of the major cause is that, having variety of subjects. Learners are free to choose their subjects according to their interests and pursue their career in that field. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address both parts of the prompt regarding the causes of fewer students choosing science and the effects on society, positioning the essay within the topic. However, the development of ideas is limited and the reasoning is occasionally unclear or tangential. For instance, the discussion on causes focuses heavily on the availability of a variety of subjects and the difficulty of entrance exams, but these points are under-developed and lack specific, well-reasoned examples. Regarding the effects on society, the essay mentions the balance of the workforce and the economy, but these ideas are somewhat generalized and confused by language errors. Overall, the response meets the prompt's structural demands but remains at a Band 5 level due to limited idea extension and lack of clarity in addressing the specific causes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs representing an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, which shows a basic organizational structure. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the logical links between ideas are frequently weak or faulty. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as the phrase 'Nevertheless, choosing other subjects bring more opportunities', which does not logically transition from the previous paragraph. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the paragraphing, while physically present, fails to effectively group cohesive themes, particularly within the body where causes and effects tend to blur into one another, resulting in a Band 5 performance.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student displays a limited and basic range of vocabulary that is minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice and spelling throughout the essay, such as 'competetion' instead of competition, 'preperation' instead of preparation, and 'attraction' instead of attention. Collocations are frequently unnatural, for example, 'want to choose easily future goals' or 'rise the nation's economy'. While the vocabulary allows the writer to convey simple messages, these frequent lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors cause some difficulty for the reader and firmly place the response at a Band 5 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical structures used are predominantly simple, with attempted complex sentences often resulting in faulty syntax and punctuation errors. Examples include dangling modifiers and subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'One of the major cause is that, having variety of subjects' and 'other sectors like banks and schools did not have any employee which disturbs the balance'. There are frequent errors in tense usage, articles, and clause structuring that can cause difficulty for the reader, although basic meaning is usually recoverable. Because complex structures are frequently inaccurate and errors are common, this corresponds to a Band 5 in grammatical range and accuracy.
