IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. I believe that people should go with those subjects with which they have done their matriculation or intermediate. Because studying the same subjects can be easy for all the students.
Everybody have their own reasons or prospectives on choosing other subjects. They had done their matric and intermediate with science but for further studies they choose other subjects rather than science.
Mostly students believe, studying science subjects can be diificult for them. They had set-up their mind that they will not pass and will not be able to get degrees in these subjets. While some students were studying arts subjects from the beginning that's why they feel that subjects easy for them so they just choose that subjects at university level too.
In addition, some students do not have the fees that they can study science subjects. Some still do courage of choosing them but when do not able to pay fee, they attemp sucide. For instance, many choose science subjects at university but they donot able to pay fees of their semesters due to poverty. As a result, university do not allow them to study there they think that their purpose of life has been ended.
On the other hand, some people find their career in arts that's why they choose other subjects like fashion designing or others. As many people get their beginning education without setting any aim and in university if they wants to become a designer they changes their field and subjects.
In conclusion, everyone has their own choice that they wants to study and what can be easy for them or suits them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing causes such as perceived difficulty and financial issues, and effects such as changing career paths or extreme distress, although some ideas are extreme or underdeveloped. The writer presents a clear personal perspective throughout the essay, stating that students should study subjects they are comfortable with or have prior experience in. However, the reasoning around some points, such as students attempting suicide due to university fees, lacks logical balance and is overly sensationalised rather than addressing broader societal impacts like a shortage of medical or technical professionals. Ideas are generally relevant to the prompt, but the lack of balanced societal analysis keeps the task response at a Band 5 level, as some arguments are limited and tangential to standard academic expectations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the overall progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by abrupt transitions and lack of clear logical links. While basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used, referencing is often unclear, as seen in phrases like 'That's why they feel that subjects easy for them so they just choose that subjects'. Paragraphing is attempted, but some paragraphs contain disparate ideas that blur the focus. For instance, financial issues and career choices are mixed awkwardly. The mechanical and sometimes inadequate use of cohesive devices points directly to the Band 5 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on simple terms like 'subjects', 'students', 'choose', and 'study'. There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'matriculation or intermediate', 'do not have the fees', 'still do courage of choosing them', and 'attemp sucide'. Spelling errors like 'diificult', 'prospectives', 'attemp', and 'sucide' occur frequently and detract from the quality of the text. Although the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey a basic message, the frequent errors and limited range mean it aligns best with Band 4 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The response shows a very limited range of structures, with frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication and strain the reader. Simple sentences predominate, and attempts at complex structures are generally faulty, such as 'Everybody have their own reasons or prospectives on choosing other subjects' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'when do not able to pay fee' (missing subjects and awkward phrasing). Punctuation and tense control are also problematic throughout the essay, including sentences starting with subordinate clauses incorrectly punctuated or lacking main verbs. These persistent structural errors place the writing firmly in the Band 4 category.
