Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many countries science is not the most choosen subject by students to study at universites. There are several factors for this issue, but in my point of view it is because of the choice teenagers are making to study what they want, and has a huge impact on society in all major fields.

Earlier, most of the students earlier were adviced to join science streams like b-tech, which created a huge impact. As the result, even after massive number of students graduating in this field every year, only few could secure a decent job with impressive salary. Most of the people were forced to join btech even without their will by parents pressure which caused a huge impact on teens as they were doing something they were not passionate about. Additionally, science field is considered to be the hardest stream amoung others as it requires a lot of time, effort and intelligence to study. For example if we consider doctors, it requires a lot of hardwork and time to become one.

Coming to the present day senario, a lot of people started enrolling in other fields other than science because of the freedom their parents gave to choose their own career paths, they decided to take those subjects because they were enthusiastic in studying them. But unfortunately, this has a huge impact as science and technology are very much needed for the country, and its citizen. This could affect in innovation, technical development and mainly in the medical industry as it needs a lot of human efforts.

In conclution, it is quite important that students start taking science courses with their own will to serve the nation and help the other individuals as it helps in overall development and wellbeing of the country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing the causes for students avoiding science and the effects this has on society. The writer attempts a position in the introduction by stating that teenagers prefer studying subjects of their own choice. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on causes focuses heavily on parental pressure and the difficulty of the science stream, while the effects touch upon innovation and medical industry shortages. While the main parts of the prompt are covered, the ideas lack the depth and extension required for higher bands, often relying on generalisations such as 'science field is considered to be the hardest stream amoung others'. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for a Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate different thoughts, such as past context versus present scenario. However, cohesion within and between sentences is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the transitional phrases used, such as 'Coming to the present day senario' and 'In conclution', are a bit formulaic. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use in 'this has a huge impact as science and technology are very much needed'. Logical progression is maintained generally, but the internal connections between ideas require smoother transitions. This places the response comfortably at Band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'enthusiastic', 'innovation', and 'wellbeing'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'choosen' instead of chosen, 'universites' instead of universities, 'btech', 'amoung', 'senario', and 'conclution'. Furthermore, collocation is occasionally awkward, for example, 'parents pressure' instead of parental pressure. While these lexical errors do not impede overall communication, they restrict the score to Band 5.5, as the control over less common vocabulary lacks precision and accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety through relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the response. Examples include missing articles ('science field', 'medical industry'), run-on or loosely connected clauses ('because of the freedom their parents gave to choose their own career paths, they decided...'), and incorrect prepositions ('in my point of view' instead of from my point of view). Although the meaning remains mostly clear and communication is rarely impeded, the density of errors prevents the grammar score from reaching Band 6.0.
