Student answer (Band 5.5)
Science was one of the most popular subject in past. Nowadays in many countries students are choosing subjects other than science as their university major. There are various reasonds behind this.
To begin with, Science is not any easy subject to study. The main reason of not choosing this subject is that people want to enjoy university life and this subject requires proper attention and hard work to get good grades. Moreover, at university level students are more involve in other activities and give fewer time to study. For instance, if they choose science subject, they need to attend all lectures carefully and attentively because without proper knowlege its would be diffucult to write anything about it.
Furthermore, Due to the advancement of technology, learning digital skills is now becoming more popular among young people. In this fast-paced world, learning and adapting themslevs according to the environment has become very important. Students nowadays choose IT related subjects because of higher opportunities of employment. Developing new programms and inventing new things gives them sense of satisfaction.
In addition, in past parents impose their disicion on their children because they think only healthcare profession can provide them respect. However this mentallity changed over the period and now parent does not force them, and students choose subject according to their will.
In conclusion, Due to technology people are less likely to choose science as major course in universities because it requires considerable time and efforts. People prefer arts and other techonology related subjects as it is high on demand and giver better employent oppertunities as compare to scienece.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying causes such as the difficulty of science subjects, the allure of digital skills, and changing parental attitudes, alongside effects like higher employment opportunities in technology. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat superficial. For instance, the point regarding parental pressure in the past and its shift today is introduced abruptly without strong integration into the core argument about science. Similarly, the effects on society are touched upon mainly through employment opportunities rather than broader societal implications. While the position is clear and all parts are addressed, the overall development corresponds best to a Band 6, where relevant ideas are presented but some are under-developed or lack sufficient extension with specific, detailed examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a logical overarching structure with clear paragraphing, dividing introduction, causes, and conclusion appropriately. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with,' 'Furthermore,' 'In addition,' and 'In conclusion,' which guide the reader through the text. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally faulty or mechanical. For example, referencing can be unclear, such as 'learning and adapting themslevs according to the environment' where the pronoun antecedent is slightly loose. Additionally, some transitions feel abrupt, and paragraph organisation lacks sophisticated progression. Overall, the logical arrangement and paragraphing meet the criteria for Band 6, despite some mechanical cohesive devices and minor referencing flaws.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'advancement of technology,' 'fast-paced world,' and 'sense of satisfaction.' However, there are numerous spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'subject' instead of 'subjects,' 'reasonds,' 'knowlege,' 'diffucult,' 'programms,' 'mentallity,' 'disicion,' 'parent does' instead of 'parents do,' and 'techonology.' Furthermore, there are awkward collocations and lexical slips, such as 'give fewer time to study' instead of 'spend less time studying' and 'high on demand' instead of 'in high demand.' Because these errors do not impede communication but are frequent enough to affect precision, the vocabulary performance aligns with a Band 5.5, rounded to 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures ('if they choose science subject, they need to attend all lectures carefully') and relative clauses. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in articles ('Science was one of the most popular subject'), subject-verb agreement ('parent does not force them'), pluralisation ('employment oppertunities'), and preposition use. There are also sentence fragments and punctuation issues, such as missing spaces after periods (e.g., 'study. The main reason'). While the mix of structures shows an attempt at complexity, the frequent errors cause some difficulty and distraction for the reader, placing this securely at Band 5.0.
