Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is argued that nowadays, there are less students who chooses to study science subjects at universities. In my opionion, its true that there are less students left who choose science subjects to study by their own and there are many reason for that.

On one hand, many individuals says that the number of science students decreases in recent time and they gives different reason for that. Some of them think that science subjects are difficult to study it is the reason why students stop choosing science subjects. These subjects are harder to study as compared to arts and other business subjects. It could be the reason of a drop in percentage of science students and high feeses are also the big reason. For instance, the fees of science subjects are higher than the other subjects and the merit of science subjects always remains high and many students donot get scholarship and those who cannot afford fees they choose other subjects to study.

On the other hand, many individuals thinks that the the biggest reason behind the drop in percentage of science students is that there are very less jobs left in field of science and those jobs which left their salaries are very low. Most of the people of our society agree with this point of view. For instance, If someone will spend two million on his degree and after completing his degree he would only get job of 30-40 thousand why would he will this field.

In conclusion, all these points which were discussed are true and I complety agree with all these points and all these points are the reason behind the drop in the percentage of science of students.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting some causes for the decline in science students, such as difficulty, high fees, and low job prospects. However, the development of these ideas is limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion around financial burdens and career prospects lacks fully elaborated consequences for society, remaining quite general and underdeveloped. The position is stated, but the ideas tend to be restated rather than extended. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to ensure that both parts of the prompt—causes and societal effects—are fully explored with extended explanations and concrete examples that go beyond superficial generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation present, with attempts at paragraphing to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. However, there is no clear overall progression throughout the essay. Cohesive devices are sometimes inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on transitional phrases like 'On one hand' and 'On the other hand' alongside mechanical repetition of ideas. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, and paragraphing could be managed more effectively to guide the reader smoothly through the arguments. To progress, the writer should focus on creating a clearer logical flow between sentences and employing a more varied and accurate range of cohesive ties.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic points about university subjects, fees, and jobs. There are noticeable lexical errors, including word-choice and spelling mistakes such as 'opionion', 'feeses', and 'complety', alongside awkward phrasing like 'why would he will this field'. These errors occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. The range of vocabulary is restricted mostly to common terms without successful attempts at less common lexical items. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their range of vocabulary, improve spelling accuracy, and work on natural collocations and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple or overly repetitive sentence patterns. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, such as in the opening sentence: 'It is argued that nowadays, there are less students who chooses to study science subjects at universities.' There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'less students who chooses', 'individuals says', 'individuals thinks'), articles, and plurals, which can cause difficulty for the reader. Punctuation is also basic with missing spaces after periods. To improve, the writer needs to increase control over basic grammatical agreements and develop a wider, more accurate variety of complex sentence forms.
