Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the causes and effects of fewer students choosing science, which aligns with the task requirements. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and lacks depth. For example, while the writer mentions that science subjects are difficult and expensive, the explanation relies heavily on repetition rather than well-supported examples. The position is generally clear, but some ideas remain under-developed, particularly the societal effects, which are briefly listed as a lack of professionals without exploring the broader ramifications. To move to a higher level, the ideas need to be extended with fully explained, specific examples and a more thorough exploration of both the causes and consequences.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is a basic level of organisation, with attempts to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. However, the overall progression of ideas is hindered by repetitive phrasing and a lack of smooth transitions. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with' and 'On the other hand', they are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly placed, making the flow somewhat disjointed. Referencing can also be unclear, as seen in sentences that run on with multiple clauses without clear logical links. To achieve a higher standard, the writer should ensure that each paragraph builds logically upon the previous one, using a wider and more natural range of cohesive devices to guide the reader seamlessly through the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, but the range is quite limited. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'artificial intelligence' and 'economic growth', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling, such as 'ans' instead of 'and', 'concequences', 'scools', and 'sujects'. Additionally, repetition of basic words like 'science subjects', 'fee', and 'difficult' restricts the variety of expression. To improve this score, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to spelling and word forms, and use less common lexical items with greater precision and stylistic awareness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and a few attempted complex structures that frequently contain errors. There are frequent grammatical mistakes throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('these sujects offers'), missing or incorrect articles, and run-on sentences that lack proper punctuation. These errors often cause difficulty for the reader and obscure the intended meaning. To progress to a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures while significantly improving accuracy in verb forms, plurals, and sentence boundaries.
