Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt minimally, attempting to discuss both the causes of and effects on society regarding students choosing not to study science. However, the ideas are limited and under-developed, which prevents the essay from moving into higher bands. For instance, the writer touches upon important points such as tuition costs, geographic distance to universities, and career opportunities, but these points are expressed through repetitive and simplistic statements rather than fully extended arguments. The discussion on effects on society tends to blur into a list of solutions rather than clearly articulating broader societal consequences, such as a shortage of medical or technical professionals. To improve, the writer needs to select distinct, relevant ideas for causes and effects and extend each one with detailed explanations and concrete examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The essay displays some organization, attempting to separate ideas into an introduction, body, and conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression of thought. Paragraphing is attempted, yet the internal flow of ideas is frequently disrupted by abrupt transitions and repetitive sentence patterns. Cohesive devices are very basic and sometimes inaccurate, as seen in the transition 'More over the out comes of the statement', which fails to effectively introduce the intended body paragraph or connect logically to the previous text. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, leaving the reader to guess the connections between sentences. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure that ideas follow a logical sequence from one sentence to the next and employ a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices to link paragraphs and arguments smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used throughout the essay is basic and repetitive, utilizing limited resources to express ideas about science education. The writer relies heavily on simple words and phrases, such as 'study of science', 'hard', and 'high course', which restricts the precision and flexibility of the response. Furthermore, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'high course', 'loss memory', and 'public transportation cost should done be less', which occasionally cause strain for the reader. While communication is attempted, the range is barely adequate for the task. To progress, the writer should incorporate a broader range of less common lexical items and pay closer attention to natural collocations and word forms associated with academic topics.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures employed in the text are very limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that are frequently faulty. The response contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('the students are can not study science'), incorrect verb forms ('The studies of science can done in university'), missing articles, and awkward prepositions. Punctuation is also problematic, leading to run-on structures and fragmented thoughts. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader in places. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence structures with improved accuracy, focusing particularly on basic clause construction, tense consistency, and correct auxiliary verb usage.
