Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt regarding the causes of fewer students choosing science and the effects on society, though the coverage remains minimal and the word count requirement is not met, falling slightly short of the minimum threshold. Ideas are presented primarily as a raw list rather than being fully extended or supported. For instance, the causes such as job opportunities, high competition, financial constraints, and fear of failure are stated without detailed elaboration or concrete examples. Similarly, the societal effects, such as impacts on technology and economic development, are mentioned only briefly. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to expand significantly on each point with well-developed explanations and ensure the word count requirement is fully satisfied.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5

The response lacks a clear logical organisation and progression. The text is written as a single block with numbered points and informal asides like 'and another golden point', failing to utilise standard paragraphing principles. Cohesive devices are largely absent or misused, resulting in a disjointed structure where relationships between ideas are not always clear. Pronoun referencing and signposting are weak, making it difficult for the reader to follow a cohesive line of argument. To improve, the writer must structure the essay into distinct paragraphs with clear introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions, while employing a variety of appropriate transition words to connect ideas smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, reflecting a limited range appropriate for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form, such as 'resons', 'dosenot', 'carear', 'peoples', 'difficut', 'phsycologist', 'studing', and 'awearness'. These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'economic development' and 'technology', the overall lexical control is restricted. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, use less common lexical items accurately, and focus on correct spelling and word forms in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The grammatical range is very limited, relying heavily on simple sentence structures and informal phrasing. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and sentence construction, such as run-on sentences ('its true that choosing science is also a good option but why should dosenot prefer it here is the reasons'), missing articles, and incorrect subject-verb agreement. These frequent errors disrupt the flow and can distort the intended meaning. To move up the scale, the student needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures with higher accuracy, ensuring proper punctuation and control over basic sentence boundaries.
