Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, stopping at only 85 words, which severely restricts development. While the writer touches on both parts of the prompt by mentioning career development trends as a cause and increased competition and unemployment as effects, these ideas are only minimally presented and remain largely under-developed. To reach a higher band, the response would need to be extended well past the current length, providing fully developed arguments with specific examples regarding why fewer students choose science and how this shortage specifically impacts society at large.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
Information and ideas are presented, but the response lacks overall structural progression and coherent organization. The text consists of a single unparagraphed block of text rather than distinct paragraphs with clear topic sentences. Furthermore, basic cohesive devices are missing or used mechanically, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters and relying on simplistic transitions like 'so' and 'therefore'. To improve, the writer needs to divide the essay into logical paragraphs representing an introduction, body paragraphs for causes and effects, and a conclusion, while employing a wider range of cohesive devices to clearly link ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for basic communication, featuring some attempts at less common and topic-related vocabulary such as 'technological advancements', 'Artificial intellegence', and 'career development'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors, such as 'intellegence' and 'techinial', alongside awkward word choices like 'great impact on market'. These lexical slips and inaccuracies prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher standard. To progress, the writer must expand their lexical range with more sophisticated, precise academic terminology and ensure accurate spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response shows a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple or slightly faulty complex sentences. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, notably the lack of capitalization at the beginning of sentences (e.g., 'the key factor', 'as world is shifting') and missing articles before singular nouns like 'market'. Despite these issues, the core meaning remains mostly accessible to the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures with greater grammatical accuracy and correct basic punctuation habits.
