Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt regarding the causes of fewer students choosing science and the effects on society, positioning it appropriately for the given band. However, the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed. For example, the connection between artificial intelligence and the decline in university science enrolments is introduced, but the explanation relies heavily on generalized statements rather than fully extended arguments. Similarly, the societal effects, such as a lack of professors or medical professionals, are mentioned briefly without deeper elaboration. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to expand on these points with more detailed explanations and fully developed examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organization present in the text, but it lacks a clear overall progression from beginning to end. The transition between ideas feels somewhat disjointed, and paragraphing is underdeveloped, as the response is split into only two dense paragraphs that lump multiple distinct points together. Furthermore, cohesive devices are sometimes repetitive or inaccurate, such as starting multiple sentences with 'various' or relying on basic connectors like 'In addition to this.' Referencing is also occasionally unclear, leaving the reader to deduce how certain ideas link back to previous sentences. To improve, the writer should employ clearer paragraph breaks, separating causes from effects, and utilize a wider, more accurate range of cohesive features.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to communicate the central ideas. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'panicking', 'phenomenon', and 'unusual impacts', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form. For instance, phrases like 'various other phenomenon also giving push to this trend' and 'newly garduated persons' contain spelling and grammatical form inaccuracies. Additionally, there is noticeable repetition of basic words throughout the response, particularly 'various', 'artificial intelligence', and 'society'. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their lexical range and pay closer attention to word formation and collocation precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of structures, with attempts at complex sentences often turning out faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that can cause occasional difficulty for the reader. Issues include subject-verb agreement errors, such as 'universities has less number of students' and 'phenomenon also giving', as well as missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and punctuation slips like lowercase letters at the beginning of new sentences (e.g., 'we will, definitely...'). The writer relies heavily on simple sentence patterns, and when attempting more complex structures, errors emerge frequently. Enhancing control over tense consistency, article usage, and complex clause structures is essential for improvement.
