Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

First, it must be noted that the response is significantly under length, containing only 114 words against the required 250-word minimum, which severely restricts development. The essay responds to the task only minimally. While it touches on both causes and effects, such as mentioning that students prefer technology and noting a shortage of doctors, these ideas are extremely limited and under-developed. The response outlines a basic position and attempts to address both parts of the prompt, but it lacks the necessary extension, depth, and support to satisfy higher criteria. To move upward, the writer needs to write at least the minimum word count and fully elaborate on each cause and effect with clear, detailed explanations and relevant examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The information and ideas are not arranged coherently, and the overall progression is difficult to follow. The text relies heavily on repetitive phrasing, such as 'not enough students want to study in science in many countries', and basic, inadequate cohesive devices like 'So, in this way'. Paragraphing is also problematic, as the text is divided into only two short blocks that fail to logically structure the introduction, body points, and conclusion. To improve cohesion, the writer must use a wider and more accurate range of linking words, ensure clear referencing throughout the text, and organise ideas into distinct, logical paragraphs where each sentence builds clearly on the previous one.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, showing a limited range that strains the reader's comprehension at times. There are noticeable lexical errors throughout the text, including spelling mistakes like 'intrests', 'phchycologist', 'sciencitific', and 'chage', as well as word choice and collocation issues such as 'study in science' instead of 'study science' and 'scientific person' instead of 'scientist'. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To reach a higher band, the student needs to expand their lexical repertoire significantly, use less common vocabulary with greater precision, and eliminate basic spelling and word choice errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent problems with verb forms and tenses, subject-verb agreement, and pluralisation, such as 'not as much students want' instead of 'not as many students want', 'intrests has been change', and 'students wants to became'. Punctuation is also weak, with missing spaces after commas and periods. To progress, the writer must practice constructing error-free sentences, improve control over basic grammar rules like singular and plural noun agreement, and attempt a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
