Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt minimally, identifying causes such as difficulty and job scarcity, and an effect like a shortage of doctors. However, the ideas are under-developed and incomplete, particularly as the essay trails off unfinished in the second body paragraph and conclusion. Furthermore, it must be noted that the response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 250 words, containing only 196 words. This severely limits the depth of coverage for both causes and effects, restricting the score to a lower band where the task is only partially addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organisation with distinct paragraphs attempted, but the overall progression is disrupted by the incomplete nature of the response and abrupt ending. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes inaccurate, such as repetitive use of lowercase letters at the start of sentences and the absence of full stops in places. Paragraphing is initiated, but the final paragraphs are cut off prematurely, preventing a logical flow of ideas throughout the essay. Referencing is basic, leading to disjointed transitions between causes and effects.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors in spelling, word choice, and word form that cause some difficulty for the reader. Examples of lexical limitations include 'intersted', 'eassay', 'finacially', 'compitetion', and 'vacciences'. The student attempts some less common terms related to university and careers, but these are marred by inaccuracies. The range of vocabulary is minimally adequate for expressing simple ideas, but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, relying heavily on simple sentence structures with frequent errors. There are persistent issues with verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as 'science subjects is tough' and 'student neglect'. Punctuation and capitalization are largely neglected, with sentences frequently starting without capital letters. While some simple sentences are understandable, frequent errors in basic grammatical patterns and the inability to maintain control over complex structures cause difficulty for the reader.
