Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task partially, attempting to discuss both the causes of fewer students choosing science and the effects on society. However, the development of ideas is limited and at times unclear. For instance, when discussing causes, the text mentions that science is a hard subject and refers to impoverished teaching amenities and poor infrastructure, but these points are under-developed and confused with effects on students' mental health. Similarly, the discussion of societal effects touches upon a shortage of professionals and low wages, but these ideas lack clear extension and strong supporting examples. The writer's position can be discerned, but the overall treatment of the prompt remains somewhat superficial and lacks the thorough exploration required for higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation in the essay, with attempts to divide the response into appropriate paragraphs for introduction, causes, effects, and conclusion. However, there is no clear overall progression throughout the text. Cohesive devices are frequently inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, such as the overuse of transitional phrases like 'To commence with', 'Case in point', and 'As an illustration' which do not always connect ideas logically. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in sentences where pronouns or logical connectors fail to link clauses smoothly, resulting in a somewhat mechanical flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic ideas related to the topic. There are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, such as 'comapred' instead of compared, 'worklods' instead of workloads, 'immnense' instead of immense, 'infarstructure' instead of infrastructure, and 'enqualities' instead of inequalities. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary like 'multifaceted' and 'conspicuous', but inaccuracies in their application and spelling restrict the range and precision of the lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside frequent attempts at complex sentences that are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('this course involved', 'students not choose'), article usage ('choosing the study science'), prepositional patterns, and awkward phrasing that can cause difficulty for the reader. Punctuation errors are also present, such as missing spaces after periods and incomplete concluding sentences.
