IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Fewer students are electing to study science for higher education across many nations because of the limited number of career opportunities. Which has resulted in the reduction of scientisits and affected the scientific discoveries around the globe.
The number of students who want to study science at universities is declining. The main reason for the decline is the lack of jobs. In recent years, many countires have reduced the funding spent for the scientific purposes, which has resulted in reduction of career opportunities. For example, after the election of President Trump, he cut the funding of many universities. As a result, universities decided to reduce the number of positions being offered every year to better manage their finances. Due to this reason, many scientists lost their jobs in the United States of America. These events discouraged students to choose scientific subjects for their higher education.
As many students are choosing other subjects instead of science for their higher education, it will have serious effects on society. For many decades, universities have given great scientisits to the world, who discovered the cure of many diseases. For example, if there were no scientists in this world, humans could not have found the cure for snake venom or the Corona Virus. As a result, limited students electing science for higher education will have a negative impact on socienty by reducing the number of scientists.
In conclusion, limited opportunities in scientific world have encouraged students to choose other subjects, which will effect the scientific discoveries around the globe by reducing the number of scientisits. I believe governments should priortize the funding of such scientific projects, so that humans can make useful discoveries for the betterment of the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the causes and effects of the decline in science students, positioning your ideas across a clear structure. However, some parts are more fully developed than others. For instance, the cause regarding funding cuts is supported with a specific example about President Trump, but the explanation of societal effects relies heavily on general assertions about cures for diseases and snake venom without expanding further into broader economic or technological consequences. To move to a higher level, you should ensure that all main ideas receive equal depth of extension and support throughout the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear organizational structure, separating causes and effects into distinct paragraphs. Progression is generally apparent, guiding the reader from the introduction through the body to the conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen in the use of sentence fragments in the opening paragraph ("Which has resulted in...") and repetitive phrasing across sections. While paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure your arguments, referencing between sentences could be managed more smoothly to avoid abrupt transitions and elevate the logical flow to the next tier.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the main points about university studies and research funding. You attempt less common vocabulary such as "financials" and "prioritize," but there are noticeable spelling errors ("scientisits," "countires," "priortize") and occasional word choice issues, such as saying "limited opportunities in scientific world" instead of "the scientific world." Furthermore, repetitive phrasing like "limited students electing science" restricts the precision of your expression. To reach a higher standard, aim to expand your range of less common lexical items and eliminate basic spelling slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating dependent clauses and conditional structures such as "if there were no scientists in this world..." There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including a notable sentence fragment right at the beginning and occasional article misuse, such as "the Corona Virus" or missing articles before plural nouns like "scientific purposes." Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede overall communication. To achieve a higher level, increase your control over complex sentence patterns and ensure that every sentence maintains full grammatical independence without fragmenting.
