Student answer (Band 6.0)

This is a growing concern that in countless nations, fewer students are selecting science as their career at university. This could be due to multiple factors related to this subject. This essay will discuss its reasons and the effects of less science students on the community.

At the outset, the most plausible reason for not choosing science in the higher studies is its complexity. Most of the individuals find it difficult to understand and choose to pursue subjects that are less challenging. For instance, a student could start learning business management in university beacuse he finds it difficult to do chemistry and physics in his secondary study. Another most significant reason is the expertise and dedication required in this field. The students these days choose those career that required less time and hard work, as a result they neglect the science stream. For example, a person choose non-medical in the secondary school but later he could not spent much time and loss the motivation to continue his course. The average doctors need 10-12 years to get proficient at their profession. Therefore, this factor plays a crucial role in changing the decision of the youngsters.

However, this trend can have deterimental effect on the society in the long run. Firstly, there will be less technical innovations in this field. If there are fewer researchers, then the amount of inventions will also be less. As a result, the people would not be able to enjoy the benefits of sciene in future. For instance, the study on various lenses are quite helpful in the daily activities such as traffic, household chores and for weak eye sighters. Secondly, there will also be fewer health experts in hospitals. In the healthcare sector, patients would not be able to get the required treatment on time due to the shortage of the doctors. Therefore, the burden on the doctors will also rise and the rate of deaths could also increase in the future.

To Conclude, fewer learners are considering the science stream due to the complexity of the subject as well as the time spent on being proficient at that profession. However, this trend can have adverse impacts on society such as less innovations and lack of healthcare facilities. Thus, more students should be motivated to choose this stream.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the causes and the effects of fewer students choosing science. The position is clear throughout the essay. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which is characteristic of this band level. For instance, while the causes related to complexity and the time required for proficiency are introduced, their explanations rely on generalised examples, such as mentioning that average doctors need 10 to 12 years without fully extending how this deters university enrollment. Similarly, the effects on society regarding innovations and healthcare shortages are relevant, but their development remains somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, the ideas would need to be more thoroughly extended with more robust and precise supporting evidence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical organization. The essay is appropriately divided into distinct paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by body paragraphs for causes and effects, and concluding with a summary. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'At the outset,' 'However,' and 'Firstly,' which helps guide the reader through the text. However, cohesion is at times a bit mechanical or repetitive, and referencing within sentences is not always completely clear, such as with pronoun usage ('this career that required less time'). To move higher, the progression of ideas needs to feel more seamless, and a wider variety of cohesive relationships should be employed without relying on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempts some less common items such as 'plausible,' 'proficient,' and 'detrimental.' However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form throughout the text, including phrases like 'less science students' instead of 'fewer science students,' 'in the higher studies,' 'loss the motivation,' and spelling errors like 'deterimental' and 'sciene.' These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a limited precision in lexical control. To achieve a higher band, the writer must consistently use less common vocabulary with greater accuracy regarding collocations and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences using subordinating conjunctions like 'If there are fewer researchers...' and 'Although...'. There are, however, some errors in grammar and punctuation, including articles ('choose those career'), subject-verb agreement ('a person choose... he could not spent'), and prepositions. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning generally remains clear. To reach the next level, the writer needs to produce a higher frequency of error-free sentences while maintaining a wide variety of complex grammatical structures.
