Student answer (Band 6.0)
In most countries lesser students are choosing to study science at the university. What can be the cause of this? What effects does it have on society?
Firstly, many students believes that science subjects are difficults and majorty of the subjects has to do with calculations. Most students always run awya from courses that has to do with maths, especially mathematics, physcis, and chemistry. Due to the fear of calculations, they all run to commerce or art. This affects the society because when the grow up with that mind set they still make other growing children beleive the same, therefore, amking science less attractive to young adults focused on rapid career advancement.
Again, the decline in science graduates has far-reaching negative consequences in the society. Primary among these is a decline in scientific innovation and technological advancement. A shortage of researchers directly delays progress in critical fields like medicine, renewable energy, and environmental conversation, impending a country's ability to address global crisis such as climate change or disease outbreaks.
Additionally, this trend creates structural skill gap inte labour market. When essential industries such as pharmaceuticals, engineering, biotechnology, lack qualified professionals, economic productivity stalls, forcing nations ro rely heavily on foreign talent or imported technological solutions.
In conclusion, the reluctance of students to pursue science degress stems from the high academic workload and less competitive iniatial salaries relative to other professions. If left unaddressed, this trend risks stifing technological progress and weakening economic development across societies.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the causes and the effects of fewer students choosing to study science. However, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 236 words (9 words copied from the prompt were not counted), falling short of the 250-word minimum. The ideas presented are relevant, but some are under-developed or lack extension. For instance, the causes are outlined generally as a fear of calculations and heavy workloads, but they could be elaborated with more specific examples. Similarly, while the effects on society such as a decline in innovation are noted, they remain somewhat broad, placing this criterion at the targeted level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical progression. Information and ideas are generally grouped into appropriate paragraphs, featuring an introduction, body paragraphs addressing causes and effects, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, with transitional devices like 'Firstly', 'Again', and 'In conclusion' used somewhat formulaically. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun reference in 'when the grow up with that mind set', which creates minor hurdles in smooth reading and prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, successfully communicating the main ideas about science education and societal impacts. The writer attempts less common vocabulary items, such as 'scientific innovation', 'technological advancement', and 'structural skill gap', demonstrating a reasonable breadth of expression. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that reflect limitations, including 'lesser students' instead of 'fewer students', 'majorty', 'physcis', 'amking', 'impending' instead of 'impeding', 'crisis' instead of 'crises', 'inte', and 'iniatial'. Fortunately, these errors do not seriously impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as conditional and relative clauses. However, there are persistent errors in grammar and mechanics throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement errors like 'many students believes', spelling-related word errors, and missing articles. While these errors are noticeable and require some effort from the reader, they rarely impede overall communication. The frequency and nature of these issues place the grammatical control firmly at the intended level.
