IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
There are multiple reasons for this, first of all the competition. There is more competition in the sciences studies than other fields like fashion designings, banking etc. The other main reason is the fee, the fee for the sciences discipline is far higher than the other discipline. So majority of the students who are capable and intelligent leave their passion for the science due to the fee structure.
Since there is higher competition in this field many students left behind due to the less numbers or some left behind due to the limited seats available in the universities. Due to this reason they also left this field or sometimes they'll take the gab year.
Due to the less number of science students countries left behind in the development field like engineering. We face less numbers of capable doctors in our hospitals and this will increase the demand of the doctors. Due to this high demand of the doctors they'll have higher fee which a normal or middle class person can not afford.
Same in the other science related fields like engineering since the engineers are less they construction take more time and we have to pay higher amount. Which will create the ecnomical problem as well as the health related issues too.
On the other hand, in other fields like banking since the pass out students are in majority they face the job issues. Because the jobs are not equalinat to the number of students available for the job. Which will create the unemployment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt regarding the causes of fewer students studying science and the effects on society, earning a passing standing for this criterion. However, the ideas remain limited and under-developed throughout. For instance, the causes are briefly introduced as competition and high fees, such as 'fee for the sciences discipline is far higher', but these points lack extension and concrete supporting examples. Similarly, the societal effects—such as a shortage of doctors or slower engineering projects—are stated simply without fully exploring the broader implications. To reach the next level, the writer needs to expand on each main point with well-developed explanations and specific real-world examples rather than relying on brief, generalized assertions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text demonstrates some organizational structure with basic attempts to introduce and sequence ideas, such as using 'There are multiple reasons for this, first of all' and 'On the other hand'. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the paragraphing is underdeveloped; the main body is split into several short, choppy paragraphs rather than cohesive, fully formed thematic blocks. Cohesive devices are used repetitively or inaccurately, as seen in the frequent start of sentences with 'Due to this' or 'Due to the less number'. To improve cohesiveness, the writer should ensure smoother transitions between sentences, avoid repetitive phrasings, and group related ideas into clearer, more unified paragraphs that guide the reader logically through the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic message but frequently restricted by simple word choices and noticeable errors. There are several instances of awkward word formation and collocation, such as 'fashion designings', 'sciences studies', and 'gab year'. Additionally, repetitive use of basic vocabulary items like 'less number' and 'higher fee' restricts the precision of the argument. Spelling errors and word-choice inaccuracies occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire to include less common academic vocabulary, use correct word forms consistently, and demonstrate better control over natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammar demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying predominantly on simple sentences alongside attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles, which can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include 'many students left behind', 'construction take more time', and 'jobs are not equalinat to the number of students'. Punctuation is also inconsistently handled, with run-on tendencies and missing commas. To progress to the next band, the writer needs to improve grammatical accuracy, ensure proper verb tense consistency, and correctly apply complex sentence structures without persistent errors.
