In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
It is often argue that in many nations students are not choosing science stream in their higher studies. Its main consequences are that in this study higher funds are required than other subjects and some of university didn't provide any scholarship to students on their marks. It has a major effect on community that there would be less number of scientist, engineers and doctors.
In many top level universities in different countries they need higher funds in science and technology stream than the other some different streams such as in commerce and humanities. And in unemployment ration there are large ratio of science students rather than others. students are choosing some lower level subjects such as carpenter and plumber course by immigrating to other countries where they can get higher salaries. There are very small no of vacancies for science scholars. So they prefer to chose the low funded programs for their higher studies rather than to chose that subject which has very low chances of success.
It puts a major impact on our society that students are choosing other subject than selecting the science stream for their career. If this is keep going on there would be only a few number of scientist, engineers and doctors left in community and they will charge very high wages for their work and poor people would face many problems.
The solution of both problems are to provide scholarship to students who perform excellent in their prior studies and give them scholarship according to their marks. And govt also had to set up some rules regarding the fee structure of higher level universities so everyone can get benefits and students must think about choosing science subject. Universities must held some consulting sessions to motivate students.
To conclude, There are some causes that why students are choosing the science subject reasons are higher funds and less chance of success. Which shows a great impact on society. It can be prevented by many solutions which are to provide scholarship and employment to science pupils.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses both causes and effects, and it also offers solutions, but the causes are not always clearly explained or well matched to the question. The points about higher study costs and limited scholarships are relevant; however, the discussion of unemployment, vacancies and students choosing “carpenter and plumber course[s]” is difficult to follow and does not establish clearly why science is less attractive. The effect of having fewer scientists, engineers and doctors is more direct, with a further consequence that their services may become expensive for poorer people. To strengthen the response, explain each cause with a clear link to students’ decisions and develop the social effects with a specific example. The overall position is present, but some ideas remain limited or unclear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, paragraphs on causes and effects, a solutions paragraph and a conclusion. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “If this is keep going on” signal a consequence. However, progression within paragraphs is often unclear. For example, the move from university funding to unemployment and then to students choosing trade courses is not connected through an explicit explanation. Linking phrases such as “So” and “To conclude” are used, but they do not always make the relationship between ideas clear, and the conclusion repeats earlier points rather than synthesising them. Use one main idea per paragraph, order supporting details logically, and use clear references to show how each point relates to the question.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some topic-related vocabulary, including “scholarship,” “fee structure,” “vacancies,” and “scientists, engineers and doctors,” so the reader can identify the general subject. However, the range is limited and several inaccurate or unnatural expressions make meaning harder to follow. Examples include “higher funds,” “unemployment ration,” “low funded programs,” and “science pupils.” Some wording is also repetitive, particularly “students,” “science subject” and “higher studies.” Aim for more precise academic collocations and vary repeated terms; for instance, describe the cost of science courses or the availability of science-related jobs directly. Check spelling and word forms as well, since errors such as “ration” for “rate” reduce clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
There are attempts to use longer sentences and conditional structures, such as “If this is keep going on there would be…” and “so everyone can get benefits,” but complex constructions are often faulty. Errors occur frequently in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence boundaries: “It is often argue” should be “It is often argued,” while “some of university didn't provide” needs a plural or article correction. The sentence beginning “To conclude, There are some causes…” also has awkward clause construction and punctuation. These errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to understand, although the overall message can usually be recovered. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with controlled clauses using correct tense and subject–verb agreement.
