IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Students are not selecting science subject at university in several countries. I will outline the reasons of this trend and its potential impacts on society in the following paragraphs.
Science is one of the main subjects at university level and students may not be able to deny its importance in education. There are numerous causes students are not choosing this subject at university such as higher difficulty level, lost interest due to emergence of other subjects like artificial intelligence, and career insecurity. In many developing countries, students do not have access to adequate and balanced diet, due to which their brain development is limited and they tend to not select science at university as they could not cope with the higher comlexity level of the subject. With advancements in technology, AI is emerging as a new subject, which most students find interesting and prefer it over science when choosing subjects at university. AI is bringing various new opportunities and roles that do not exist before. So, students think that their career will be more secure with new subjects than science.
However, this shift is not coming without drawbacks and potential effects. Equal development in science and technology could bring many benefits to society. When students do not prefer to study science, societies will lack science graduates, which will affect their progress in innovation and research and it will be left behind other sectors. For example, a shortage of medical science graduates could lead to many deaths which could have been avoided with innovation in medical science and research on better treatment procedures. It will also create an imbalance in the job market, leaving more vacant jobs and less grad
In conclusion, while higher complexity level, lack of interest, and career insecurity leading students to select other subjects over science, this trend will have a severe impact on society, such as deaths of many patients which could be controlled

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question and maintain a clear focus on declining science enrolment. The causes you identify—perceived difficulty, competition from AI-related subjects, and concerns about career security—are relevant, and the medical-research example helps illustrate a possible social consequence. However, some explanations are less convincing or developed than others. The claim that inadequate diets limit students’ brain development is asserted without support and does not clearly explain the wider trend; the point about career insecurity also needs evidence or a clearer link to students’ choices. The effects paragraph identifies shortages in research and healthcare, but the final point about job-market imbalance is cut off. Develop each main idea with a clear explanation and a complete example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, a paragraph on effects, and a conclusion. The progression from reasons to consequences is generally logical, and signposting such as “However” and “For example” helps readers follow the argument. This already gives the essay a coherent overall arrangement. To make the progression more consistently clear, avoid packing several causes into one long paragraph and give each a more distinct explanation. Some links are mechanical or unclear, such as “So” introducing the career-security claim, while “it” in “it will be left behind other sectors” has an uncertain reference. The job-market point ends abruptly, and the conclusion repeats the medical consequence rather than bringing the main causes and effects together.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “career insecurity,” “innovation,” “research,” “shortage,” and “job market,” which makes the main ideas clear. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “treatment procedures.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “lost interest due to emergence” would be more natural as “reduced interest following the emergence,” and “Equal development in science and technology” does not clearly express the intended idea. “Higher complexity level” is also less idiomatic than “greater complexity.” Spelling errors such as “comlexity” and “grad” reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural collocations and proofread spelling, especially in key topic terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “AI is emerging as a new subject, which most students find interesting” and a conditional structure in “When students do not prefer to study science…”. Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “students may not be able to deny its importance” is an awkwardly constructed claim, while “students are not choosing this subject… such as higher difficulty level” has an incomplete grammatical link between the clause and the list. In the conclusion, “while higher complexity level… leading students” lacks a complete main clause structure, and “which could be controlled” does not clearly attach to the intended meaning. Check articles, clause construction, and sentence completion, particularly when combining several ideas.
