IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many countries, fewer students are choosing to study scienceat university. This essay ill discuss the main reasons for this trend and will examine its effects on society.

One major reason is that many students consider science subjects to be difficult and demanding. Subjectssuch as physics, chemistry and biology requires considerableeffort, mathematical abilityand regular study or offer more flexibility. Moreover another important factor is the perception of carrer oppurtunities. Young people are often attracted to fields such as bussiness, technology and finance because they believe tht these areas can provide better salaries and faster carrer progression. In addition, some schools may not have enough well-equiped laboratories or experienced science teachers, which can make science less interesting for students.

This decline can have several negative effects on society. Firstly, there may be a shortage of qualified scientists, researchers and engineeres in future. These professional are essential fordeveloping new medicines, improving technology and finding solution to environmental problems. Secondly, a lack of science graduates can reduce a country's abilityto compete internationally. forexmaple, counties that invest heavily in scientific research are more likely to developi innovative technologiesand attract international investments. Finally, society may become more dependent on other countries for scientific discoveries, medical technology and advanced products.

Thus concluding, the main reasons why fewerstudents choose science include the difficulty of these subjects, attractive alternativesand inadequate educational facilities. If this trend continues, countries may face shortages of skilled professionals and slowerscientific and technological development .Therefore government and educational institutions should make science education more interesting and provide better oppurtunitiesfor students.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the question and presents a clear overall account: it identifies perceived difficulty, attractive alternative careers and limited school facilities as causes, then explains possible shortages of specialists, weaker international competitiveness and greater dependence on other countries. These points are relevant and the examples of medicines, technology and environmental solutions help show their social importance. This meets the task well, though some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the claim that business, technology and finance offer better salaries and faster progression would be stronger with a brief explanation or example. Likewise, the effects could be developed by showing more directly how shortages would affect everyday life or public services. More specific support would make the discussion more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, a paragraph on effects and a concluding summary. The sequence within the body paragraphs is generally logical, and signposts such as “One major reason,” “Firstly” and “Secondly” help readers follow the argument. However, some linking is mechanical, and the conclusion’s “Thus concluding” is an awkward transition. The sentence beginning “Moreover another important factor” also combines ideas in a way that makes the relationship between career alternatives and flexibility unclear. In the effects paragraph, the example about countries investing in research is relevant but its connection to the preceding point could be made more explicit. Use a wider range of natural transitions and clearer references between claims and examples to improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate its main points, including “qualified scientists,” “scientific research,” “environmental problems” and “international investments.” It also attempts some more specific expressions, such as “career progression” and “well-equipped laboratories.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate word forms are noticeable and sometimes interrupt reading: examples include “carrer,” “oppurtunities,” “engineeres,” “professional” where a plural is needed, and “developi innovative technologies.” Some collocations are also imprecise, such as “better opportunities for students” when the intended meaning is opportunities to study science. Build accuracy by proofreading spelling and choosing natural combinations of words; this will make the vocabulary more effective without requiring unnecessarily complex terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is an attempt to use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “because they believe that these areas can provide better salaries” and a conditional structure in “If this trend continues.” The main ideas are usually understandable, but errors in agreement, sentence construction and punctuation remain. For example, “physics, chemistry and biology requires” should use a plural verb, while “These professional are essential” needs a plural noun form. The opening of the causes paragraph also contains a faulty construction: “or offer more flexibility” does not fit the preceding sentence. Several words run together, making sentence boundaries and punctuation harder to follow. Check subject–verb agreement and ensure each clause connects grammatically; then proofread spacing and punctuation.
