IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In today's fast growing world, not too many adults are selecting science to study in university. There are many reasons for this and it also has effects on society.
One of the reason why many students are not interested in choosing science is saturation, many individuals thinks that their is high competition in the field of science and it will be tough for them to compete with others as the technology is getting more advance day by day.
Another reason why many students are now avoiding science subjects are because of Artificial intelligence. Because with the arrival of AI many people lost their jobs, and AI is now performing their work for free, for instance, according to a survey, in the field of web development 90 percent of the people lost their paid jobs, because AI is now building websites with more pace and with cheap cost.
These are the few reasons which effects the society heavily, people are now more concerned about their profession especially in the field of science and now they are trying to move on to another line of work, moreover, this might effect the whole country more significantly if the society starts to lose interest in science and technology, a country with less technology might not be able to compete with other nations. In conclusion, Government should take necessary steps to keep citizens interest alive in technology, so we can compete with the developed countries like Chine, Japan, and USA who are taking technology to next level.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both causes and effects, and your central concern—that students fear competition and AI-related job losses—can be identified. You also explain a possible wider consequence: countries may struggle to compete if interest in science and technology declines. However, the response only partially develops the task. The first cause, “saturation,” is not clearly explained, and the AI example focuses on current web-development jobs rather than showing why students avoid studying science. The effects are also mostly asserted rather than explored; for example, explain how fewer science graduates could affect healthcare, research, or innovation. A clearer position and more specific, relevant support for each main idea would make the response more complete and convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation: the opening introduces the topic, the next section gives two causes, and the final section discusses consequences and offers a recommendation. Basic links such as “Another reason” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the broad direction. However, progression is limited because causes and effects are crowded together, particularly in the long paragraph beginning “These are the few reasons.” The relationship between the AI example and students’ study choices is not made explicit, and “these” does not clearly identify which points it refers to. Repetitive sentence openings and abrupt transitions also weaken cohesion. Use separate, focused paragraphs for causes and effects, and connect each example directly to the claim it supports.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “competition,” “Artificial intelligence,” “profession,” and “technology,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “paid jobs” and “developed countries.” However, the range is limited and several choices or collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, which sometimes makes the meaning less clear. For example, “saturation” does not clearly express the intended concern about competition, and “with more pace and with cheap cost” is not natural phrasing. “Move on to another line of work” is understandable but informal for this essay. Aim for precise academic expressions and check word forms and spelling, including “China,” to improve clarity and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts some longer sentences and subordinate clauses, for example, “if the society starts to lose interest in science and technology,” but control is inconsistent. Errors occur in basic agreement and sentence construction: “many individuals thinks” should use a plural verb, while “Another reason … are because” has a mismatch between the subject and verb. The opening phrase “to study in university” also shows difficulty with articles and prepositions. Some sentences run together, as in the sentence linking “saturation” and “many individuals,” and the sentence beginning “Because with the arrival of AI” is an incomplete construction. These patterns can make the reader pause. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then build longer sentences with clear clause boundaries and consistent agreement.
