IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Nowadays, students prefer not choosing science subjects to study in educational instituitions is very common. This can be due to the lack of interest in science and relevant fields because they see it as a subject which is very difficult. They get a thought about it in their minds as some very intense and difficult subject to learn.

The main causes of this type of lack of interest in learning science from learners appear because of less exposure to science subjects. This is due to the complex theortical formulas and equations used in such subjects. Pupils find it very hard for another reason which is that science subjects are very time taking. You have to learn everything a lot of times in order to get your mind used to everything you have learned.

In order to get rid of this problem, teachers are prefering to teach learners in easy and understandable methods as possible. This can be acheived with the help of continous presentation and exposure of complex common topics that the majority of the students find hard. Clear presentation and orientation also helps in this case which leds students to opt these types of subjects more often.

In my conclusive remarks, teachers should explain everything to the students about the subjects they are going to choose so they get a clear idea about what they are going to study in the subject, this can help reduce confusion among the students and give them a vast idea for that field and also make it easy for them to understand it very clearly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify plausible causes, especially students’ perception that science is difficult and the complexity of its formulas and equations. However, the response does not fully answer both parts of the question: it gives little explanation of the effects on society, such as shortages of scientists, slower technological development, or reduced capacity to address health and environmental problems. The paragraph beginning “In order to get rid of this problem” focuses on how teachers could encourage students, rather than explaining societal effects. Your concluding remarks repeat this recommendation, so the main ideas remain limited and under-developed. To strengthen the response, explain the consequences directly and support each cause and effect with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a recognisable paragraph structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, a paragraph about teaching approaches, and a conclusion. This gives the reader some organisation. However, the progression does not consistently follow the task: after discussing causes, the essay shifts to solutions instead of societal effects, and the conclusion repeats the teaching recommendation. Connections between ideas are sometimes unclear, as in “The main causes … appear because of less exposure,” which does not clearly show how limited exposure relates to the earlier point about difficulty. Linking phrases such as “This is due to” and “In my conclusive remarks” are used, but they do not create a clear overall line of development. Organise the body around the two requested parts and make each paragraph’s purpose explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “complex theoretical formulas and equations,” “exposure,” and “confusion,” and the reader can generally understand your intended meaning. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, such as “very difficult,” “very hard,” and “very time taking.” Some word combinations are unnatural, including “get your mind used to everything” and “opt these types of subjects.” Spelling errors such as “instituitions,” “theortical,” “prefering,” and “acheived” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise academic expressions and check spelling carefully. For example, describe science as “perceived as demanding” and say students “choose” or “pursue” science subjects.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and most of the message remains understandable. However, the range is limited, and complex constructions are often faulty. For example, “students prefer not choosing science subjects to study in educational institutions is very common” has an unclear sentence structure, while “This is due to the complex theoretical formulas” is incomplete because “complex” is followed by “the” without a noun phrase that fits the intended meaning. There are also errors in verb forms and agreement, as in “teachers are preferring to teach” and “Clear presentation and orientation also helps.” Practise building clear subject–verb–object sentences, and check agreement and verb forms when combining clauses. Greater control would make your ideas easier to follow.
