IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In many parts of world the number of students who choose science stream for their higher education has decreased remarkably. There are so many reasons responsible for that practise and which affects society differently.
The primary reason behind not choosing science is money. In science stream it is students have to go for tution classess and nowadays the amount of fees for tution classess take has increased significantly. Some parents can not afford that amount so they just go with different courses. And after education is also so costlly comapre commerce and arts so it is very easy to chhose other streams.
The another reason behind this is hard work. For science students they need to do lot of hard work to become Doctors , Architect or Engineer. While with other courses like commerce and arts they have to do comparatively less work. Because in science they have lengthy syllabus and students have to remember everything so it is quite difficult for students as well. So mostly students continue with different ways.
Not having enough science students affects community. The first effect is number of Doctors we are having right now is very small. According to the study for 1000 people we have only one Doctor to treat. In some crisis like Covid we faced very tough situation. Some other carriers are also in threat because of not having enough number of applicants.
In conclusion, there are number of reasons like higher fees and hard work behind not choosing science for higher studies that may affect community in various ways.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you identify financial pressure and the perceived workload as reasons for fewer students choosing science, then describe possible effects on healthcare and other careers. These points are relevant, and the reference to the shortage of doctors during Covid gives the impact a concrete example. However, the causes are explained more fully than the effects. The claim that other careers are “in threat” is not clarified, and the doctor-to-population figure is presented without explaining its source or wider significance. Develop each effect by showing how it affects people or services, and make the links between students’ choices and these outcomes explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two paragraphs explaining causes, a paragraph on effects, and a conclusion. Topic sentences such as “The primary reason” and “The first effect” help readers follow the main points. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, with repeated patterns such as “The another reason” and “So mostly students.” Some links between ideas are also unclear; for example, the move from the difficulty of science studies to students choosing “different ways” needs a more precise explanation. Use a wider range of linking expressions and clearer referencing, and organise each body paragraph around one main point with supporting explanation.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “higher education,” “fees,” “syllabus,” and “applicants.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning less clear. Examples include “science stream,” “tution classess,” “carriers,” and “in threat”; the intended meanings appear to be science subjects, tuition classes, careers, and being at risk. Spelling errors such as “costlly” and “comapre” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise academic vocabulary for discussing education and social consequences, and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including a reason clause beginning “Because in science…” and a comparison with other courses. The overall meaning is generally understandable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms occur throughout. For example, “The primary reason … is money. In science stream it is students have to…” contains an incomplete or incorrectly formed clause, while “number of Doctors we are having right now is very small” has problems with articles and tense. There are also missing articles and inconsistent punctuation, as in “for 1000 people we have only one Doctor to treat.” Practise building complete clauses and checking articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries.
