IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is becoming increasingly common that limited pupils in several countries are choosing science at higher educational institutes. There are several reasons such as difficulty of science subjects and better opportunities in other fields. It also effects the society as it slows down the technical innovation and shortage of skilled scientists.

One of the major reasons of not choosing science subjects is difficulty. Science subjects seem to be more difficult as they demand logical reasoning and problem solving. As a result, students who are weaker in these areas prefer to choose other subjects. For instance, physics requires students to understand mathematical concepts and solve complex problems. Another reason is better opportunities in other fields. People prefer to take admission in other fields as their are better business and job opportunities for them. For example, people choose to study business and accounting at the universities as it help them to build their business and get a better job in the future.

On the other hand, it also effects the society as it causes the shortage of skilled scientists. Lack of science students in the society means shortage of skilled scientists which means less scientists will available ti do research. As a result, it causes fewer scientific discoveries. For example, a shortage of medical researchers can lead to slower down the development of new treatments and researches. Another effect is slower innovation. Lack of science students can lead to slower innovation of new machines and equipment. As a result, this causes the slower country growth internally. For instance, countries with fewer scientists may struggle to keep up with modern and advanced technology or artificial intelligence.

To conclude, the difficulty of science subjects and better opportunities in other fields are the reasons why fewer students choose science subjects. This trend can result in shortage of skilled scientists and slower innovation of technology.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the question and presents a clear explanation: students may avoid science because it is difficult or because other fields appear to offer better opportunities, while society may face fewer scientists and slower innovation. The examples about physics and medical research make the points relevant. However, some ideas are only partly developed. The claim that business and accounting lead to better jobs is asserted rather than explained, and “slower country growth internally” is unclear. The effects also overlap somewhat, since fewer discoveries and slower innovation are closely related. To strengthen the response, explain the causes and consequences more precisely and show how they affect society, for example through reduced research capacity or dependence on imported technology.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, one on effects, and a conclusion. The progression from reasons to consequences is easy to follow, and signposts such as “One of the major reasons,” “Another reason,” and “To conclude” help orient the reader. This coherent arrangement is a strength. At times, however, cohesion is mechanical or repetitive: “As a result” appears several times, and the effects paragraph repeats the link between fewer science students and fewer scientists before moving to research. Some references, such as “it” in “it also effects the society,” are not fully clear. Use a wider range of linking methods and make each sentence add a distinct step to the explanation.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses enough topic vocabulary to communicate its main points, including “logical reasoning,” “skilled scientists,” “scientific discoveries,” and “artificial intelligence.” These choices show an attempt to discuss the issue specifically. However, word choice and collocation are often imprecise, which limits clarity and naturalness. Examples include “limited pupils” for a small number of students, “higher educational institutes,” “slower innovation of new machines,” and “slower down the development.” There are also word-form or spelling errors, such as “effects” used where the verb “affects” is needed and “ti” for “to.” Aim for more natural academic collocations and check word forms carefully; this would make the vocabulary more precise while preserving the clear meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect clauses such as “As a result, students who are weaker in these areas prefer to choose other subjects.” Most ideas remain understandable, and the paragraph structure supports the message. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “it also effects the society” has an incorrect verb form and article, while “less scientists will available” is missing a verb form and uses an incorrect quantifier. In “as their are better business and job opportunities,” the subject-verb construction is faulty. Work on accurate sentence patterns, including “fewer scientists will be available,” and review articles and agreement. Greater control of these forms would make the varied structures more reliable.
