Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this contemporary era, many students are not opting science at universities in various nations. There are several reasons of this trend and can have many impacts on the society. The same will be discussed in the following paragraphs.

First and foremost, the most important reason behind not choosing science is that most of the students find science a very complicated subject. There are some subjects of sciece such as, Maths and Physics which includes various mathematical equations and are very difficult to solve. Moreover, in the scientific field students need to do practical experiments in the laboratories and it is not an easy task for all. The trend has various concequences such as, it leads to lack of skilled professionals like doctors, engineers and scientists.Furthermore, there are less innovation in the country. To exemplify this, an article by the Times of India mentioned that due to lack of interest of students in science the innovation and growth of technology in India is decresing dramatically.

To add further, another cause of this trend is that fields other than science like arts and commerce allow students many opportunity in less time. While, for completing a science degree like,to become a doctor it will take 5 to 7 years. Additionally, these subjects are easy to complete compared to science. However, this leads to overcrowding of students in one field which also reduces job opportunities as many students are qualified in only one field. Ultimately, it increases the rate of unemployment in that country. For instance, one report by the Forbes magazine showed that in one country due to less selection of science in universities the unemployment rates are increased.

In conclusion, the complexicity and time consuming nature of science subjects are the major causes of less interest in the field by students. This trend leads to lack of professionals and decrease in the innovation of the country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question by identifying perceived difficulty and the longer duration of science degrees as causes, then linking low enrolment to shortages of professionals, reduced innovation, and unemployment. These ideas are relevant, and the examples about India and a report add support. However, some effects are asserted rather than clearly explained: for example, the connection between fewer science students and unemployment is not fully established, and the report example is vague (“in one country”). The discussion of why arts and commerce attract students could also be developed with a clearer explanation of the opportunities involved. To strengthen the response, explain each cause-and-effect link more precisely and use specific, credible examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The first body paragraph focuses mainly on difficulty and its effects, while the second introduces the time required for science degrees and discusses employment consequences. Linking phrases such as “First and foremost,” “Moreover,” and “To add further” help signal progression. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and ideas within paragraphs are occasionally joined without a clear relationship; the shift from fewer science graduates to unemployment, for instance, needs a more explicit explanation. The conclusion repeats the main points but does not bring the effects together. Use clearer referencing and connect each supporting example directly to the claim it illustrates.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “practical experiments,” “skilled professionals,” “innovation,” and “unemployment,” so the main ideas are generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the most important reason” and “time consuming nature.” However, several word-choice and collocation problems reduce precision, including “reasons of this trend,” “less innovation,” and “allow students many opportunity.” Spelling errors such as “sciece,” “concequences,” “decresing,” and “complexicity” also affect accuracy. Aim for natural academic collocations and check spelling carefully; more precise vocabulary would make the argument sound clearer and more controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “which,” “while,” and “that,” and most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, particularly with subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries. For example, “Maths and Physics which includes” has a plural subject with a singular verb, while “there are less innovation” has a number-agreement problem. The opening also runs “nations. There” together, and “While, for completing a science degree…” is an incomplete or awkwardly attached clause. Review agreement and sentence punctuation, and make sure subordinate clauses are connected to complete main clauses. Greater accuracy in these areas would improve control without sacrificing sentence variety.
