Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many countries, an increasing number of students are avoiding science subjects at university, which has become main concern. This essay will discuss about the main reason for the trend and its effects on society.

There are several reasons why students are less interested in studying science subjects. Firstly, science subjects are often considered difficult because they have complex theories, calculations and practical experiments. As a result, many students prefer subjects such as arts and busines, they may fine them easier to understand. Secondly, science courses can be expensive and time-consuming, while some students want to earn money as soon as possible. Moreover, if schools do not provide well-equipped labs and qualified teachers, students may lose interest in science before entering university.

This trend can have also negative effects on society. If fewer learners choose science course ,there may be shortage of doctors, engineers and science researcher in the future. Consequently, the development of new medicines machinery could slow down. Due to this, the life of people effect badly. For example, doctors and scientist play an important role in development of serious disease, if lack of serious researchers, this situation could more difficult. Furthermore, countries with fewer science graduates may struggle hard to compete with other nations in technology development.

In the summery, the difficulty of science subjects, limited education facilities and financial concerns are some major reasons why students avoid science at university. If government and educational institutions provide better facilities and financial support to students, more students encouraged to study science, which would benefit society in long term.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the question and gives relevant causes, including the perceived difficulty of science, course costs and time demands, and limited school facilities. It also explains plausible social effects, such as shortages of doctors, engineers and researchers and slower technological progress. The final paragraph offers a clear, relevant recommendation. These points show a sound response to the task, but development is uneven: the causes are listed more clearly than they are explained, and the example about researchers and serious diseases is difficult to follow. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely how each cause discourages university study and develop one social consequence with a specific, coherent example rather than making broad claims.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall progression: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, a paragraph on effects, and a conclusion. Topic sentences such as “There are several reasons” and “This trend can have also negative effects” help readers follow the main sections, while “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Furthermore” signal relationships between points. This organisation is effective, though some linking is mechanical and a few connections are unclear. For example, “Due to this” does not clearly identify which preceding effect it refers to, and the example about disease research is not smoothly connected to the shortage of professionals. Use more precise referencing and make the links between claims and examples explicit to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate its main ideas, including “complex theories,” “well-equipped labs,” “financial support,” and “technology development.” However, noticeable spelling, word-form, and collocation errors reduce precision and sometimes make phrases difficult to understand. Examples include “busines,” “fine them easier,” “science researcher,” “the life of people effect badly,” and “in the summery.” Some wording is also broad or repetitive, such as “development” and “difficult.” Build accuracy with common academic collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully; for instance, describe how people’s lives are “adversely affected” and refer to “scientific researchers” or “science graduates.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is an attempt to use both simple and more complex structures, including a conditional sentence beginning “If fewer learners choose science courses” and a clause introduced by “because.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and punctuation occur across the response. For example, “This trend can have also negative effects” has awkward adverb placement, while “there may be shortage” lacks an article and “doctors and scientist play” has a number-agreement error. The sentence beginning “For example, doctors and scientist…” also joins ideas without clear grammatical control. Practise accurate clause boundaries and check articles, plurals, and verb agreement while retaining the range of sentence forms you are attempting.
