Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many states not enough pupils are selecting to pursue science study at university. This issue can be attributed to several factors, and it can have various negative effect on the society. This essay will discuss its main causes of this trend and possibly consequences.
There are several reasons why students are not interested in studying science. The main reason is that pupils believe that science subjects are difficult and it can be hard for them to compete in that course. For instance, Mathematics and physics are the toughest subjects in science therefore pupils prefer easy subjects. Another important factor is, students think other career pays more as a result students prefer other fields, such as buisness, law or information technology, which they believe offer better career opportunity.
This trend can have several negative effect on society. One major consequences is that shortage of scientists and researchers. In other words, more students will prefer less other fields and there will be less scientist and researchers who can help the country grow faster in economy. For instance, a shortage of science graduates may slow down technological development and scientific research. This could make it more difficult for countries to solve important problems related to healthcare, environmental protection and energy production.
In conclusion, the declining number of students choosing science at university is mainly caused by prefering high pays job. This trend can lead to shortage in scientist, which may negatively affect a country's development. Therefore, governments and educational institutions should take steps to encourage more students to pursue science-related degrees.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question by identifying reasons students avoid science and explaining consequences for society. The points about perceived difficulty and the belief that other careers pay better are relevant, and the examples of healthcare, environmental protection and energy make the social effects clearer. However, the causes are developed more fully than the effects: the claim that fewer scientists may slow economic growth is broad and would benefit from a specific explanation or example. The conclusion also introduces a recommendation for governments and institutions, although the task asks about causes and effects. To strengthen the response, explain each cause-and-effect link more fully and keep the conclusion focused on the question.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for causes and effects, and a conclusion. This makes the main progression easy to follow, and phrases such as “For instance” and “In other words” help signal examples and explanations. Cohesion is sometimes mechanical, however, with repeated openings such as “The main reason,” “Another important factor,” and “One major consequences.” Some references are also unclear, particularly “more students will prefer less other fields,” which makes the relationship between the shortage and students’ choices difficult to follow. Use a wider range of linking and referencing, and make each sentence connect explicitly to the point before it.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “scientists and researchers,” “technological development,” and “scientific research,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “environmental protection” and “energy production.” However, several word-choice, collocation, and word-form errors reduce precision: “negative effect” should be plural here, “high pays job” is unnatural, and “buisness” is misspelled. Phrases such as “science study” and “better career opportunity” are also awkward or imprecise. Build accuracy by learning common academic collocations and checking spelling and singular/plural forms, while retaining the relevant subject vocabulary you already use.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple sentences and more complex forms, including a relative clause in “scientists and researchers who can help the country grow” and a conditional result in “This could make it more difficult for countries to solve…” These structures generally communicate your meaning. Some grammatical errors remain, especially with agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “other career pays more” has a singular subject where a plural form is needed, while “One major consequences is” mismatches the determiner, noun, and verb. The opening also shifts from “This issue” to “it” without a fully clear reference. Review agreement and article use, and proofread each sentence for a complete, consistent grammatical structure.
