In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There are several countries where students prefer studying any carrer which is not related to study science. There are some causes why they are taking this decision. This essay explains causes and effects of this topic.
Firstly, the salary is not enough for the total of time someone spends studying. It depends on the country where an individual is living, but there are vast of places where people feel that they receive an unfair payment. For instance, according to my experience, in Ecuador, if you study something relate to Graphic Design, you can easily reach the same payment than a doctor. If you study Graphic Design, you only have to spend from 2 to 3 year in a University, on the other hand, to be involved in something related to the health sector, you need to study 5 years, later you have to do practices in the rural area around 1 year. To clarify this point a doctor after 6 years of study can earn around $700 every month, meanwhile a graphic designer can earn $750 monthly, and only 2 years of study.
Secondly, the difficulty to find a job, it is a normal concern of young generations. Due to an overdemand in the health sector or in any career of learning of science. For example, if there are 40 new doctors every 6 months in a small area where there is a hospital, they will be facing each others for the same role. The person who takes the vacancy stays in the place and the rest have to look for another city or other activity to do.
Thirdly, the effects on society include lack of well-trained staff in hospitals in critical areas such a surgery, for example when a person needs an specialist in the heart, it is really likely that the person has to wait for a long time while the hospital try to get an specialist from overseas. And the other effect is that people start a tendency where they can earn more money than someone who chose a difficult and important career, and the youghts copy this trend.
In conclusion, the main cause is that there is a wage injustice and the effect on the society is that the population face a place with lack of well-trained staff and students start to choose a career that can offer a better payment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the question: it gives causes for low interest in science, including perceived low pay relative to the years of study and difficulty finding work, and explains social effects such as shortages of specialist medical staff and the influence of salary choices on younger people. The Ecuador comparison and the example of new doctors competing for one vacancy make the causes relevant and concrete. This meets the task well, with some elements developed more fully than others: the pay argument is supported in detail, while the employment cause and the broader effect on society receive less explanation. To strengthen the response further, clarify how these causes apply to science degrees generally, rather than focusing mainly on medicine, and extend the social consequences beyond hospitals.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for two causes and the effects, and a conclusion. Sequencing signals such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the main points, and the examples generally appear alongside the ideas they support. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and some links between ideas are unclear. For example, “Due to an overdemand…” is not smoothly connected to the preceding sentence, while “And the other effect” begins a point in a rather abrupt way. The conclusion repeats the main points but does not bring them together in a more developed way. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make the relationship between each claim and its explanation explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate its main ideas, including “unfair payment,” “overdemand,” “well-trained staff,” and “specialist.” The examples also show an attempt to express specific concepts rather than relying entirely on general language. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or awkward, as in “study science,” “the total of time,” “same payment than,” and “facing each others.” Some spelling and word-form errors, including “carrer” and “youghts,” also reduce precision. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the overall argument, but they limit fluency and naturalness. Build accuracy by learning common academic collocations and checking spelling and word forms, especially in key phrases used to explain causes and effects.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including conditional and time clauses, as in “if you study Graphic Design” and “while the hospital try to get an specialist from overseas.” The main ideas are usually understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. Examples include “there are some causes why they are taking this decision,” the incomplete construction “Secondly, the difficulty to find a job, it is…,” and agreement errors such as “the hospital try.” Articles and plural forms also need attention in phrases such as “an specialist” and “each others.” To improve control, check that each sentence has a complete main clause, and review subject–verb agreement, articles, and singular/plural forms. More accurate complex sentences would make the reasoning easier to follow.
