In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many countries fewer students are choosing to study science at university. This is mainly because science subjects are quite difficult and require years of study, while other fields may offer better career oppurtunities. This trand can have serious effect on society, particularly on technological development and healthcare.
On the one hand, there are several reasons why students avoid sciene degrees. Firstly sujects such as physics, chemistry and biology require strong academic knowledge and regular practice. Moreover, lackings of proper infrastructure, well equipped laboratories and proper learning method in the institutions makes it harder for the students to practiclly do well in these subjects. Secondy, students often consider future salaries and job oppurtunities while choosing career path. For example, in Bangladesh studying in a business administration or computer related subjects may open the doors to many job options in banks, private and public corporate companies and technology sector. In contrast, some science students may need more specialized skills/training or further education to secure a well paid jobs. As a result, students may see science degrees very demanding without proper future.
On the other hand, students seem to choose business administration, social science or computer related subjects to be more convenient because they require less academic pressure and most often studying in these subjects are quite enjoyable for some students as they offer greater interaction like group assignments and projects and also presentations. Furthermore, these subjects offer more variety of jobs and require less traiting compared to science subjects.
However, the importance of science subjects are immense for a soceity and for a country. Because if there are less students studying in these subjects, it means less research on fields like medicines, engineering etc. Its very necessary for a society to have doctors, engineers and researcher to develop and contribute to the society's well being. Moreover, without these professional a country will be in dire trouble and will have to depend on foreign talents to serve in this sector. For instance, a country with too few scientific researchers may have to depend heavily on foreign technology and imported medical equipment. Furthermore, scientific knowledge is also essential to address air, noise and eviroment pollution.
In conclusion, students are increasingly avoiding studying in science subjects because of its difficulties and uncertain career oppurtunities. If this trend continues, society may face a shortage of skilled professionals and experience slower progress in healthcare, technology and environmental protection. Therefore, governments should improve science education and provide scholarships and better career opportunities to attract more students.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses both causes and societal effects, and its position is clear: students avoid science because of its demands and uncertain prospects, while society risks shortages and slower progress. Relevant examples include the Bangladesh job-market comparison and dependence on imported medical equipment. The conclusion also offers a practical response through improved education, scholarships and career opportunities. Some points are developed more fully than others: the career-choice explanation has concrete detail, whereas the claim that alternative subjects involve less academic pressure is asserted rather than supported, and the effects on healthcare and pollution could be explained more specifically. This covers the task well, but fuller development and more precise support would make the discussion more consistently convincing. The response contains 411 words; 8 words copied from the prompt were not counted.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, cause-focused discussion, effects, and a conclusion. Paragraphing generally helps the reader follow the argument, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Moreover,” “However,” and “In conclusion” make relationships between points visible. However, the progression is not always smooth: the paragraph beginning “On the other hand” continues discussing reasons and overlaps with the preceding paragraph, rather than presenting a clearly distinct contrast. Several transitions are also mechanical, and the repeated use of “Moreover” and “Furthermore” makes the links feel formulaic. The reference in “these subjects” is not always immediately precise. Grouping all causes together and all effects together, then using clearer links between each claim and its explanation, would strengthen the overall progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses enough topic vocabulary to discuss education and society, including “technological development,” “specialized skills,” “scientific researchers,” and “environmental protection.” It also attempts more specific expressions such as “well equipped laboratories” and “career opportunities.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy, for example “oppurtunities,” “sciene,” “lacking,” “traiting,” and “soceity.” Some combinations are awkward or imprecise, including “without proper future,” “a well paid jobs,” and “less traiting.” Repetition of “subjects,” “students,” and “opportunities” also limits flexibility. These issues do not prevent the main ideas from being understood, but careful proofreading and more natural collocations would make the vocabulary more controlled and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause in “while other fields may offer better career opportunities” and a conditional structure in “If this trend continues, society may face…”. Most ideas remain understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless recur. For example, “the importance of science subjects are immense” has subject–verb disagreement, while “a well paid jobs” has an article and plural mismatch. In “the institutions makes it harder,” the plural subject does not agree with the verb, and “Because if there are less students…” is an incomplete, awkwardly connected sentence. The long sentence beginning “Moreover, lackings…” also has several structural problems. More consistent agreement, complete sentence construction, and punctuation around subordinate clauses would improve accuracy while preserving the range of structures attempted.
