IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Medical and sciences are an important aspect of our lives and they play vital roles in each country. Engineering and mechanical fields are on trend these days. These are on competition in the present era.
The main reason that students do not chose to study science at medical university is the expensive fees. In Pakistan, the cost of (MBBS) is $40,000 or above for the whole course. Similarly the cost of (BDS) is $30,000 approximately for 4 years course. Majority of the parents cannot afford such fees and they have to chose another path. In many countries, the scolarships provided are very less which leave a bad impact on the future generation.
The another big reason behind this is, the increasing demand of artificial intelligence which is taking the jobs of many doctors and those who research on medical related topics and mysteries. Another reason is the demand of engineering and computer sciences. Many students prefer to be an engineer or work under technology.
The another reason is the challenging phases for students in this field becaus there are a lot of doctors and people in medical fields in each country. On every road u can find people who are in varios medical fields and they are in competition with each other. On the other hand, there are some hospitals and doctors who are in demand and the whole city prefers them to another ones. It results in demotivating the new students and they lose their hope to chose science for the next life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify several relevant causes, including high university fees, limited scholarships, competition from engineering and computer science, and concerns about AI replacing medical work. The Pakistan examples give the discussion some specificity. However, the task asks about effects on society, and this part is only touched on indirectly: you mention that scholarships may affect the “future generation” and that students become demotivated, but you do not explain the wider consequences of too few science graduates, such as shortages of healthcare professionals or reduced research capacity. Some claims, especially the effect of AI on doctors’ jobs, also need clearer explanation or support. Develop the social effects as a distinct part of the response and make the links between each cause and its consequences explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure, and the discussion generally moves from reasons for students’ choices to competition in medical fields. Linking expressions such as “Similarly” and “On the other hand” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, the overall progression is difficult to follow because the causes are listed one after another without a clear distinction between the task’s two parts. Repeated openings such as “The another reason” make the organisation mechanical, while the final paragraph shifts between the number of doctors, competition, popular hospitals, and students’ motivation without clearly showing how these points connect. Use separate, purposeful paragraphs for causes and societal effects, and use clearer references and transitions to guide the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “scholarships,” “artificial intelligence,” “research,” and “competition,” which helps communicate the main ideas. However, the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, sometimes making the intended meaning harder to understand. For example, “on competition” and “on trend” do not express your point clearly, and “chose” is used where the present-tense form is needed. There are also spelling errors such as “scolarships,” “becaus,” and “varios.” Aim for more precise academic collocations and check spelling carefully. Replacing general or awkward expressions with phrases such as “face intense competition” and “are increasingly popular” would make the argument clearer and more appropriate to the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, and most of the main ideas can be understood. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in sentence construction and grammatical forms. Examples include “The another big reason,” “the cost of (MBBS) is $40,000 or above for the whole course,” and “they have to chose another path.” In “the scholarships provided are very less which leave a bad impact,” the clause structure and agreement are also faulty. Some sentences run together or use punctuation in ways that make relationships between ideas unclear. Practise accurate articles, verb forms, agreement, and sentence boundaries, then build longer sentences with controlled clauses. This will help you express cause and effect without sacrificing clarity.
