In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Most of the students are focusing on learning other subjects instead of science subjects in universities. Science has a fundamental role in society but somehow, still people chose to study other subjects rathar than learning science becuase of its difficulty.

In my opinion, many countries offer science related subjects that are quite difficult to learn. For example, science subjects involve numerous chemical equations, researches and requires alot of hard work. Most of the students choose easy path instead of hard ones. They just wants to graduate from universities with high cgpa , that's why not enough people choose such research- based subjects.

Moreover, another reason is that people now-a-days leaning more towards art related subjects where they can find a creative employment opportunities in future. For example, a person with an art background can find a job in various fields: textile designing, graphic designing and other related fields whereas, science person may have difficulty in finding jobs and newbies initially needs to do unpaid intership work to gain some experience.

In addition, not learning science subjects can affect on society as science plays a significant role in community. those who have great intrest in science subjects can become future scientists and reasearchers. Such people make society proud by highlighting their counties' name on an international levels. So if there will be not much scientists nor any reasearches, the country will definiately meets hardship in future.

In conclusion, science subject comes with the great responsibility of society but it's difficult studies may people want to switch to other subjects.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: difficulty and the perceived effort involved are given as causes, while the possible shortage of scientists and researchers is presented as a societal effect. The examples of chemical equations and art-related careers help make the causes relevant. However, the effects discussion is less fully developed than the causes: the claim that countries may face “hardship in future” is broad, and the point about national pride does not explain concrete consequences for society. Develop this section with specific effects, such as slower medical or technological progress, and explain how they follow from fewer science graduates. Your position is clear, but some ideas need fuller explanation and support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement, moving from an introduction to two cause paragraphs, an effects paragraph and a conclusion. Paragraphs generally have identifiable purposes, and signposts such as “Moreover,” “In addition” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the progression. At times, however, the linking feels mechanical, and connections between claims are not always explicit. For example, the effects paragraph moves from future scientists to making society proud, then to national hardship without clearly showing the causal links. The conclusion also repeats the general point rather than drawing the causes and effects together. Use clearer referencing and explain how each example supports the paragraph’s main idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range for the topic, including relevant terms such as “chemical equations,” “research-based subjects,” “textile designing” and “scientists and researchers.” These choices make the main ideas understandable, and you attempt some more specific vocabulary. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “rathar,” “becuase,” “reasearches” and “counties’,” while phrases such as “creative employment opportunities” and “science person” are imprecise or unnatural. Repetition of “subjects” and “science” also limits flexibility. Check spelling carefully and learn common academic collocations, such as “science-related degrees,” “career opportunities” and “scientific research,” so your meaning sounds more precise and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “because” and a contrast introduced by “whereas.” The overall meaning is usually clear, but some errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction remain. For example, “Most of the students choose easy path” needs an article, and “They just wants” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “science subjects involve … and requires,” the verb does not agree with the plural subject. The final sentence, “it’s difficult studies may people want to switch,” is also structurally unclear. Practise checking each sentence’s subject and verb, and revise complex sentences to ensure their clauses connect correctly.
