IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many nations, students are not interested in pursuing science, in their higher studies as there are not well known jobs in this field. Also science is taught as a memorization course rather than an experimentation subject. Not having enough scientists can effect the economic growth of a nation as well as tit can have a huge effect in the sector of health and medicine.
The foremost reason students do not enroll in science related degrees is because there are less expectations of securing a job after the completion of the degree. As other sectors like IT and businesses are excelling as they provide better job opportunities. For instance if a student is making a decision on deciding what to purse as their major they always look up their career path, if they would be able to make money after completing their studies in a particular field. Another reason would be science is not being taught like it should be; with experiments, it is taught as a memorization subject.
As a result of these factors society faces economic effects as science drive much of modern economic growth. Shortage of scientists can cause slow innovation and reduce county's competitiveness, leaving a country to be dependent on imported technology and foreign experts. Fewer lab specialists means slower progress on diseases and weaker healthcare systems. For example a country striving in the sector of healthcare will face many causalities.
In conclusion not opting to choose science as a major, is due to the fact it is being taught just to memorize the concepts and fewer job oppurtuinites in this field. Not havong enough scientists can have an effect on country's econo mic growth and healthcare system.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you identify limited job prospects and memorisation-focused teaching as causes, then discuss economic and healthcare consequences. The point that science supports innovation and national competitiveness is relevant, and the example of slower progress on diseases helps illustrate the social impact. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the claim that science degrees offer fewer job opportunities would be stronger with a specific explanation or example, and “a country striving in the sector of healthcare will face many causalities” is unclear and does not convincingly show how a shortage of scientists leads to this outcome. Develop each cause-and-effect link more precisely and support it with a clear example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, one on effects, and a conclusion. This makes the main line of argument easy to follow. You also use signposting such as “The foremost reason,” “As a result,” and “In conclusion.” At times, however, these links feel mechanical, and some connections between ideas are not fully clear. The opening sentence combines low interest with limited job prospects, while the next sentence introduces teaching methods without a smooth link. The example about healthcare casualties also interrupts the progression because its meaning is unclear. Use more precise referencing and connect each example directly to the point it supports.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “experimentation,” “economic growth,” “innovation,” “competitiveness,” and “healthcare systems,” which allows you to discuss both causes and effects. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “foreign experts” and “lab specialists.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “less expectations,” “science drive,” and “many causalities.” Spelling errors such as “oppurtuinites” and “havong,” along with the mistyped “econo mic,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural academic collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe “limited employment prospects” and a “shortage of scientists.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional example beginning “if a student is making a decision” and a cause-and-effect sentence beginning “As a result of these factors.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. For example, “science drive much of modern economic growth” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “there are not well known jobs” has an awkward sentence structure. The opening also contains an unnecessary comma after “science,” while the final sentence has unclear article use in “on country's economic growth.” Practise checking agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, and revise complex sentences to ensure their grammatical relationships are clear.
