In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Science subject plays a crucial role in academic therotical and practical studies; however, in numerous international countries, students tend to pursue other fields over scientific programs in educational intitutions. The major cause of this developments includes, prohibitive costs of science programs and intellectual difficulty, whereas it also has detrimental impacts on society, such as lack of knowledge and awareness.

On one hand, the major cause of less enrolenments in science program is because of prohibitive costs of private scientific courses in universities. This is because many middle-class families are not financially stable to afford the fees of scientific degree for their family members. Furthermore, science programs are often known for their difficult curriculams, which discourage many average students to get addmision. Science studies consist of daily laboratory practicals and heavy calculations, which need students to research about their therotical studies on daily bases. For instance, multiple students in major private universities tend to pursue engineering and computer fields over science programs.

On the other hand, this development also has notable drawbacks on society growth and development. The major effect on society is lack of knowledge about science technological advancements. This is because students who enrolled in other major programs are often lack the logical knowledge of scientific research as their programs consist very limited science materials. Moreover, students are also unaware about the technological shifts in modern science. The reason is that they donot know the importance of science research and logics. For instance, students of computer fields are tend towards technological advancements rather than studying the logical science behind that.

In conclusion, science plays a vital role in our daily wellbeing and everything we saw in our surrondings may have logical possibilities in science. Although scientific program are highly costly and difficult in study, we cannot overlook the effects of less scientific awareness in youth on society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question by identifying high costs and demanding curricula as causes, then discussing reduced scientific knowledge and awareness as effects. These points are relevant, and the examples about laboratory work and students choosing other fields help illustrate them. However, some ideas are not fully explained: the claim that private-course costs deter students could be supported with a clearer account of how this affects subject choice, while the societal effects remain broad. The example about computer students focuses on their interest in technology but does not clearly show a wider consequence for society. Develop the cause-and-effect links and add a more specific social impact, such as shortages of science professionals or weaker evidence-based decision-making.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for causes and effects, and a conclusion. The progression from the reasons students avoid science to the consequences for society is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the organisation explicit. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, linking is sometimes mechanical, with repeated “This is because” and “Moreover,” and some references are unclear, as in “this development” and “that.” Improve cohesion by varying transitions and making each sentence’s connection to the main point explicit. More precise links between examples and claims would also make the argument flow more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “prohibitive costs,” “curriculums,” “laboratory practicals,” “technological advancements,” and “scientific research.” This gives the response an appropriate academic focus, and the main meaning is generally understandable. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, word forms, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make phrases awkward: “academic therotical,” “less enrolenments,” “society growth,” and “unaware about” are examples. Some expressions also lack precision, such as “logical knowledge of scientific research.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than choosing a more formal-sounding phrase that does not fit. Proofreading spelling and checking collocations would make your vocabulary more effective and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “which,” and “although.” This allows you to explain causes and effects, and the overall message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “students who enrolled … are often lack” combines incompatible verb patterns, while “students of computer fields are tend” has an incorrect verb form. In “science plays a vital role … everything we saw,” the tense shifts unnecessarily. Review subject–verb agreement and the forms required after verbs such as “tend,” “lack,” and “enrol.” Greater control of these patterns, alongside the complex structures you already attempt, would improve accuracy.
