IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Students in most countries are prefering other subjects over science due to many suficient reasons. As we know that science and computing are getting increased day by day in our life.It plays an important role in every field of life. So, due to this reason, other passions are getting out of members that makes a student easy to get a chance in these type of subjects. However, sciences are getting tough very quickly which makes a student lose his interest in it.And science is also making progress so early dur to which a weak student can never help himself to understand this level of progress in no time.Thats why many students choose buisness and other fields over science.
It contains a big impact on our society. As most students lose their interest in science which makes it a weaker society.Because science is the mother of other fields. Without its knowledge a human can never be as smart and elegant as he is.According to this situation, we may face difficulties of having no expert scientist in future. And it will stop the flow of education. If students will not stop deflecting sciences, then the humans will stop progressing in a couple of years.
In my opinion, there should be a proper arrangement of subjects for every student according to his interests. The merit of science should not be so high that makes it tough to get a admission in it.And we should add a proper practical session of experiments that make it easy and understandable for the students.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both parts of the question: you suggest that science is becoming more difficult and that students may prefer other subjects, then describe possible social consequences such as fewer expert scientists and slower progress. These are relevant points, but the causes are not always clearly explained. For example, the claim that other subjects offer students an easier chance is difficult to follow, and the idea that science advances too quickly needs a specific explanation or example. The effects section also relies on broad claims, such as science being “the mother of other fields,” without showing how a shortage of science graduates would affect everyday life. Develop each main point with a clear cause-and-effect explanation and a relevant example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: causes are discussed first, followed by effects and then a personal recommendation. This helps the reader identify the main sections. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear, and several ideas are joined mechanically with “So,” “Because,” and “According to this situation.” For instance, the link between science becoming more important and students choosing other subjects is not made explicit. Some references are also difficult to interpret, such as “it” in “It contains a big impact on our society.” Use clearer topic sentences, organise each paragraph around one main idea, and make links between claims explicit rather than relying on repeated connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “expert scientist,” “practical session,” “experiments,” and “progress,” which helps communicate the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate enough to make parts difficult to understand. Phrases such as “other passions are getting out of members,” “a weaker society,” and “stop deflecting sciences” do not express the intended ideas clearly. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “suficient,” “dur,” and “buisness.” Build a more precise vocabulary for describing educational choices and social consequences, and check spelling and collocations carefully. Prefer familiar, accurate expressions over ambitious phrases that do not fit the meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses beginning with “which” and conditional forms such as “If students will not stop…”. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and frequent errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. Examples include “Students … are prefering,” “science and computing are getting increased,” and “a admission.” The conditional sentence would also be clearer with a suitable present-tense form after “if.” Punctuation and spacing need attention: several sentences run together, and spaces are missing after full stops. Practise building accurate sentences with one main clause and a clearly controlled subordinate clause before adding more complexity.
