Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify plausible causes, including attractive opportunities in entertainment and other non-science careers, and you recognise a societal consequence: reduced scientific and technological progress. However, the response only partially addresses the question. The causes are not clearly explained, and the discussion shifts confusingly between science’s benefits and students’ reasons for avoiding it. For example, the paragraph beginning “On the other hand” describes job security and remuneration in science but does not explain why students still choose other subjects. The effects on society are also asserted rather than developed; “inconvenient lives” and a “lack of knowledge” need specific explanation. Japan is relevant as an example of innovation, but its connection to the consequences of fewer science students is unclear. Develop each cause and effect with a clear explanation and example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has an introduction, several body paragraphs and a conclusion, so there is some organisation, and phrases such as “In addition” and “To conclude” signal stages of the essay. However, there is no clear overall progression: the first body paragraph discusses non-science career opportunities, the next praises science careers, and the relationship between these points is not made explicit. Some linking phrases are inaccurate or mechanical, including “One the one hand” and “On the other hand,” which do not establish a clear contrast between the paragraphs. The Japan example also appears after the effects paragraph without a clear link to the point it supports. Use topic sentences that state one main idea per paragraph, then connect explanations and examples directly to that idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “job security,” “remuneration,” “science and technology,” and “innovation.” These choices show some awareness of academic subject language. However, the range is limited and several noticeable word-choice, collocation and spelling errors make parts difficult to understand. For example, “declining to select to learn science” is an awkward way to describe students’ choices, while “the talent people,” “grabing this time,” and “well paid job” are imprecise or unnatural. Spelling errors such as “chossing,” “carreer,” and “remuneration” also reduce accuracy. Build a bank of natural phrases for causes and consequences, and check spelling and collocations when revising.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional idea in “if there are no more science students in the future,” and you use some subordinate clauses. However, the range is limited in practice because many sentences contain frequent errors in sentence construction, agreement, articles and verb forms. For example, “One the one hand there are several opportunities are coming” combines incompatible structures, and “many students show keen interest” is missing an article. The fragment “Will be in lack of knowledge” has no clear subject or complete verb structure, while “government providing” lacks a finite verb. These errors sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to follow. Practise building complete sentences with one clear subject and verb, then check agreement and articles.
