Student answer (Band 6.0)

Students are avoiding science as their choice of study at universities in a lot of countries around the world. In this essay, I shall explain why students find science difficult to study and how avoiding to stud science can lead to less number of merit people in a society.

A lot of students find science too difficult to understand. A reason for this issue is mostly because these students are made to believe that science is difficult from an early stage of life. In many countries, such as Bangladesh, a student must excel in their academic performances in primary education to study science. This creates a general impression that science is harder to study than usual. As a result, when the students are about the age of studying at universities, they try to avoid taking science as their choice of degree.

The most noticeable problem which arise because of this issue is that the number of smart and sensible individuals reduce in a society. As there are less number of students pursuing science as their choice of study in universities, more individuals without the basic concepts of science increase within the community. For which, the society lacks of individuals capable of critical thinking, and problem solving. For instance, many African countries lack of notable individuals who have strong influence on modern science and technological achievement as there are very few number of students that pursue science as their university degree.

In conclusion, the reason for which students decide to skip science as their university major in many countries is moslty because they perceive it as a difficult topic to study. This tendency ultimately produce more and more intellectually poor people within the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you explain that students may avoid science because they are taught to regard it as difficult, and you describe a possible social effect in terms of fewer people with scientific knowledge and critical-thinking skills. The Bangladesh example helps make the proposed cause more concrete. However, the explanation of effects is less fully developed: the claim that society will have fewer “smart and sensible individuals” is broad, and the reference to African countries is not supported with a specific example or a clear explanation of how university choices produce the stated outcome. Develop the effects through a more precise consequence, such as shortages of researchers or reduced capacity to address public-health and technology challenges.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph on causes, one on effects, and a conclusion. The progression from students’ perceptions to their university choices is easy to follow, and phrases such as “As a result” and “For instance” help signal relationships between ideas. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, links are occasionally mechanical or unclear. “For which” does not connect the preceding idea naturally, and “this issue” could refer to more than one point. Use clearer referencing and vary transitions by showing the precise relationship between each claim and its evidence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “academic performances,” “critical thinking,” and “technological achievement.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the most noticeable problem.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “less number of merit people,” “smart and sensible individuals,” and “intellectually poor people” do not express the intended social consequences appropriately. “Avoiding to stud science” also contains an incorrect word form, while “moslty” is a spelling error. Aim for precise academic terms and check collocations; for example, discuss a shortage of qualified scientists or a reduced scientific workforce rather than labelling people as intellectually poor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional-style explanation beginning “As there are less number of students…” and a relative clause in “individuals who have strong influence.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make relationships less clear. Examples include “the number … reduce” instead of “the number … reduces,” “the society lacks of individuals” instead of “society lacks individuals,” and “This tendency ultimately produce” instead of “produces.” There are also problems with plural and comparative structures, as in “less number of students.” Review subject–verb agreement and countable-noun patterns, then proofread each sentence for a complete, natural grammatical structure.
