Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In contemporary world very little pupils from many countries are preferring to study science at university. This trend is mainly because of difficulty of the scientific subjects and various attractive subjects options are available for students. it can have seious consequences for society, particularly on technology and public health.
One of the primary reason for why fewer students are choosing science is that it is a hard subject to study. Students often find it difficult and time consuming to study subjects like physics, chemistry, and biology. As a result, they choose subjects that are less challenging and offer more career opportunities. For example, students often select bussiness administration and later open their own companies without spending time on studying biology and chemistry. Hence availability of less difficult and successful career options are influencing students choices.
this trend can cause decrease in science graduates which leads to poor scientific development and research. A country may suffer from scientific researchers shortage. Moreover, a shortage of health propessionals make it

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify a plausible cause—science subjects are difficult and time-consuming—and begin to explain effects on research and public health. However, the response addresses the task only partially: the causes are briefly stated, and the effects are introduced but not explained or supported with examples. The final sentence, “Moreover, a shortage of health propessionals make it”, is unfinished, leaving the public-health effect unclear. The business example is relevant in principle, but its link to students avoiding science needs fuller explanation. The response is also 83 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to develop both parts. Extend each main idea with a clear explanation and a specific example, and complete the effects discussion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph about causes, and a paragraph beginning to discuss effects. Linking expressions such as “As a result,” “For example,” and “Moreover” help show relationships between ideas. However, progression is limited because the effects paragraph stops mid-sentence, and the cause paragraph moves from difficulty to career opportunities without clearly separating or fully connecting these points. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the repeated cause-and-effect sequence. Use a clearer paragraph plan, with one developed paragraph for causes and another for effects, and make sure each paragraph reaches a complete concluding point. Consistent capitalisation at the start of sentences would also make the organisation easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “scientific development,” “research,” “career opportunities,” and “public health,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There is also an attempt to use more specific subject names, such as “physics, chemistry, and biology.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate, including “very little pupils,” “various attractive subjects options,” and “scientific researchers shortage.” Spelling errors such as “seious,” “bussiness,” and “propessionals” are noticeable and reduce precision. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, “few students,” “a wider range of appealing degree options,” and “a shortage of scientific researchers” would express your ideas more clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a result clause in “As a result, they choose subjects…” and a relative clause in “subjects that are less challenging.” These structures generally make the central meaning understandable. However, errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction remain, as in “One of the primary reason,” “availability … are influencing,” and “a shortage of health propessionals make it.” The final sentence is incomplete, and the lowercase starts in “it can” and “this trend” show inconsistent sentence punctuation. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and singular/plural forms, and ensure every sentence has a complete main clause. More accurate control of these patterns would make your ideas easier to follow.
