IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, in many nations not enough students are choosing to study science at university. Youngsters are not interested in science and this issue is prevalent in today's world. From my standpoint, it can be caused by lack of resources at schools, such as equipment and finally it will have a negative effect on society.
To begin with, studying scientific subjects like Biology or Chemistry is an engaging process; however they are not interesting for students because of lack of experience and practical work. To illustrate this, the majority of public schools in Georgia are not well-equipped, as well as in many other countries. They are not provided with basic resources and students do not have the opportunity to get involved in experimental work. In addition, learning only theory is boring and they can hardly find science interesting. Ultimately, due to the fact that children do not have hands on experinece in science, they are not eager to study science at universities, because only theory is not enough to motivate them.
This issue is widely spread over the world and society can face serious problems. According to the BBC, they prove that less and less individuals opt for studing science in the future. To reinforce my idea, this trend leads to a shortage of scientists and also doctors. In the near future finding professional doctors will be fairly challenging and if it is possible, visiting them will not be affordable for everyone. Furthermore, lower number of scientist can have a detrimental effect on the development. In the near future, technology improvement will become a complicated procces, because of less specialists. As a result, this problem can create variety of problems in the future.
To conclude, this problem can be caused by lack of experience in youngsters and consequently it can negatively affect on people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you identify limited practical resources and experience as a cause, then explain possible effects through shortages of scientists and doctors and slower technological development. The examples about public schools in Georgia and access to medical care make the response relevant. However, the causes are narrower and more fully explained than the societal effects, which are mostly asserted rather than supported with specific examples. The BBC reference is vague and does not clearly substantiate the claim. The conclusion repeats the main points but does not add a developed final insight. To strengthen the response, explain how practical science teaching could influence university choices and develop each predicted effect with a concrete example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph on causes, one on effects, and a conclusion. The progression from inadequate school resources to reduced interest in science is easy to follow, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “To conclude” help readers navigate the argument. This coherent organisation is a strength. However, some linking is mechanical, and the reference in “According to the BBC, they prove” is unclear: the reader cannot tell who “they” refers to or how the source connects to the point. The final sentence of the effects paragraph also repeats the idea of future problems. Use more precise referencing and connect claims through explanation rather than relying mainly on transition phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range for the topic, including relevant terms such as “well-equipped,” “experimental work,” “shortage,” and “detrimental effect.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and some less common vocabulary is attempted. However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce precision: “studing” and “procces” are misspelled, “technology improvement” is unnatural, and “variety of problems” is imprecise. “Hands on experinece” also needs accurate spelling and conventional hyphenation. Repetition of “in the near future,” “problem,” and “science” limits flexibility. Aim for more precise academic collocations and proofread spelling; for example, describe “technological progress” and a “range of challenges.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “because,” “as,” and “if.” Most of the meaning remains clear, and the longer explanation of how theory-only lessons affect students shows an attempt to develop complex ideas. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “they are not interesting for students because of lack of experience,” the article and construction need attention; “a lack of practical experience” would be more accurate. “Lower number of scientist” has problems with the article and plural form, while “affect on people” uses an incorrect verb pattern. The sentence beginning “According to the BBC” also has an unclear grammatical reference. Review articles, plurals, and verb patterns, while retaining your varied sentence structures.
