IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Science is one of the major and vast subject that is studied across the world. Many universities offers science and huge amount of scholarship opportunities for students to study abroad and advance in their studies. The reason behind this is, most countries are quite limited in this context, because most of the students are not choosing science. It's mostly because it's unaffordable for most of the middle class families. Alongside with that, there are limited seats for scholarships. This, kind of, demotivates them. Thus, moving on, choosing another field of study. Sadly, some of the countries are not advanced enough to have job opportunities in their relevant field. There are no bigger laboratories to practically perform the theories or do testing. This is due to the lack of equipment and funding. The business market of science requires a large amount of funding from the Government. In this way, the students will have the opportunities to learn and practice in different departments. It is effecting our society in a drastic way. Low business market, low job opportunities resulting in leaving your own country, away from your loved ones, and start living in another country. I am actually facing the same issue. My professional education did not allow me to earn enough in my country. This is one of the major reason, that I need to go abroad and advance in my career. I have done my Master's in Medical Laboratory Sciences, during that, I have never got n opportunity to work in an single equipment. This made me realized, that I shouldn't have advanced my field.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both causes and effects, identifying affordability, limited scholarships, inadequate facilities and funding as reasons students avoid science. You also explain possible consequences, including weak employment prospects and graduates moving abroad, and your experience in Medical Laboratory Sciences gives the response a relevant example. However, the ideas are only partly developed: the link between limited university places and students’ choices is not fully explained, and the effects on society are mostly presented as individual migration and low job opportunities. The opening comments about universities and scholarships are also not clearly connected to the main argument. Develop each cause and social effect with a clearer explanation or example, and state your overall position more directly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is some grouping of related points, and expressions such as “Alongside with that” and “Thus” attempt to guide the reader. However, the response does not progress through a clear structure: causes, facilities, government funding and effects run together without distinct paragraphs. Some transitions are awkward or leave fragments, such as “Thus, moving on, choosing another field of study,” while “It is effecting our society” introduces effects without clearly linking them to the preceding points. The personal example also arrives late and is not clearly separated from the general discussion. Organise the essay into an introduction, a paragraph explaining causes, a paragraph on societal effects, and a conclusion; use linking phrases to show the relationship between each idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “scholarship opportunities,” “job opportunities,” “laboratories,” “equipment,” and “funding,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “Medical Laboratory Sciences” and “practically perform the theories.” However, the range is limited and several choices or combinations sound unnatural or imprecise: “vast subject,” “low business market,” and “advance my field” do not express the intended ideas clearly. Repetition of “opportunities” also reduces variety. Build a more precise set of phrases for university study, research resources and employment, and check that each word combination is natural in context. For example, describe a “limited job market” rather than a “low business market.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentence forms, including explanations with “because” and “due to,” and the main message is generally understandable. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence construction. Examples include “Many universities offers,” “a large amount of scholarship opportunities,” and “I have never got n opportunity to work in an single equipment.” The fragment “Thus, moving on, choosing another field of study” also lacks a complete clause, while “This made me realized” uses an incorrect verb form. Practise building complete sentences and checking subject–verb agreement, articles and verb patterns. Shorter, accurate sentences would make your ideas easier to follow before you attempt more complex structures.
