Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In different countries, many students are getting reluctant to choose science as their undergarduate or graduate subjects. There are several causes behind this demotivation .Science is losing its appeal as an university subject as it does not have enough job sectors especially in the poor countries.

In poor countries the problem is becoming more severe. In a third world country like Bangladesh, there are not enough science related jobs due to its poor economy.Firstly,It does not have any scientific laboratories within the country. Secondly, due to its poor economy ,it does not large industries where they can hire science graduates.Thirdly, their universities produce very low quality graduate every year who are not skilled to work abroad or home.As a result, their poor insfrastructure is affecting the quality of science graduates and they also dont find any jobs for them after graduation.

On the contrary, the rich countries have quality of education which make their graduates skilled in several directions. In addition to that, they have large industries which hire good amount of fresh graduates for their company. So,science condition is getting affected by the economical condition of the country.

The effects on the society are not welcoming.People living in the poor countries tend to think that science is no longer a lucrative subject in world. However, the reality is different.Organisations like the nobel committee are encouraging humans to take science and do extensive research on it.The abel and other prestigious societies are also giving prizes as a motivation for the scientists. The advancement of technology,ai depends on the improvement of science. As a result, without improving science ,we cannot solve the mysteries of the nature. So, we cannot solve many unsolvable problems of the world. In my opinion, science should not die with economy. It should be alive and serve the purpose of humanity.Consequently, society should change its direction towards science especially in the poor countries.

In a word, economical barriers put a blocakage on science popularity which is not welcoming in society. To conclude, the appeal of science is still high in the rich countries and several oraganisations keep motivating the scientists.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both causes and effects, and the discussion of limited laboratories, industries and employment in Bangladesh gives the response a relevant central focus. You also identify a wider consequence: people may see science as an unattractive subject, while reduced scientific progress could limit society’s ability to solve problems. However, the causes are developed more fully than the effects, which are mostly asserted rather than explained with specific examples. The contrast with wealthy countries is relevant, but claims such as universities producing “very low quality” graduates need clearer support and more precise explanation. Your position that science should serve humanity is apparent, though the conclusion mainly repeats earlier points. Develop each effect through a clear cause-and-consequence explanation and support general claims with concrete examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: it introduces the issue, discusses economic causes, contrasts poorer and richer countries, and then considers effects before concluding. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly” and “As a result” make some relationships clear. However, progression is not consistently smooth. The paragraph beginning “On the contrary” shifts to wealthy countries without clearly linking that comparison to the causes, and the effects paragraph moves between public attitudes, awards, technology and unsolved problems without developing a single line of reasoning. Several transitions, including “In a word” followed by “To conclude,” are repetitive. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example directly to the point it supports; reduce formulaic linking phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “scientific laboratories,” “science graduates,” “lucrative subject,” “advancement of technology” and “prestigious societies.” These choices help communicate the subject and show attempts to use more specific language. However, noticeable word-choice, collocation and spelling problems sometimes make the meaning less precise: “science condition,” “good amount of fresh graduates,” “insfrastructure,” “blocakage” and “oraganisations” are examples. Some phrases are also awkward or vague, such as “science should not die with economy” and “solve the mysteries of the nature.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than more elaborate wording, and proofread spelling. More precise terms for employment, research capacity and social consequences would make the argument clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including cause-and-effect structures such as “As a result, without improving science, we cannot solve…” and a relative clause in “universities produce… graduates who are not skilled.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main message is generally understandable. However, errors recur in sentence boundaries, articles, agreement and verb patterns. For example, “as an university subject” has an article error, “it does not large industries” is missing a verb, and “the rich countries have quality of education which make their graduates skilled” has problems with article use and subject–verb agreement. Punctuation and spacing around sentence openings are also inconsistent. Practise checking each sentence for a complete verb, correct agreement and clear punctuation, while retaining the complex structures you attempt.
