Student answer (Band 6.0)
Subject selections at university level has changed dramatically in recent years with many students drifting away from science subjects and opting for various other options like arts, economics etc. This is due to many factors which we are going to discuss in this essay.
With a fast growing world and media, students are getting more knowledge and information about a variety of fields like journalism, media studies or other related subjects. There are alot of career counsellors on the internet, from whom students take advice before finally deciding what they are going to study in the universities. In contrast, a few years back, these sort of things did not exist and the trend of studying science was at it's peak. The world was developing through science advancements and companies were paying high salaries to the individuals. But as of now, many fields are excelling in the market such as media houses, news channels, marketing industries etc. Moreover, the job is comparitively easy and more enjoyable than science fields.
Due to this reason, societies may face shortage of science individuals like engineers, doctors and scientists. This can negatively impact a country's development in terms of new inventions or discoveries. Scientists work on alot of projects and develop new stuff which gives a jump to the economy of a country. But with more students inclining towards diverse careers, this can have serious implications. According to the latest data, in 2025, only 35% students selected science subjects in UK as compared to 2017, where 68% of the students opted for science related subjects.
In conclusion, due to the awareness of career counsellors online, students can analyze their interests and capabilities better than before. Due to this, they can thoroughly think about their careers and choose subjects of their interests as compared to the past, where everyone just followed a trend.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both causes and effects, and the response stays focused on the question. The explanation that online career guidance and greater awareness of fields such as journalism and media can draw students away from science is relevant, as is the point that this may reduce the supply of engineers, doctors and scientists and slow innovation. However, the causes are developed more fully than the effects: the discussion of economic development and inventions remains general, and the UK figures are presented without a source or explanation of how they demonstrate the wider social impact. The conclusion also shifts towards approving students’ freedom to choose, rather than clearly summarising the causes and consequences. Develop each main point with a specific, credible example and make the effects more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining causes, a paragraph on effects, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress in a logical order, and linking phrases such as “Moreover,” “Due to this reason,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “With a fast growing world and media” does not clearly establish how the following point about career information leads to fewer science choices. The conclusion introduces the idea that students can choose according to their interests, which is not fully connected to the effects paragraph. Improve progression by making each paragraph’s central point explicit and using references that clearly link causes, evidence and consequences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “career counsellors,” “science advancements,” “inventions,” and “discoveries,” so the main ideas are understandable. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “implications” and “inclining towards.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural, including “a jump to the economy,” “new stuff,” and “the job is comparatively easy,” which weaken the academic tone. Spelling and word-form errors such as “alot,” “comparitively,” and “it's” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and avoid informal wording; for instance, describe how research “contributes to economic growth” rather than saying it gives the economy a jump.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “which gives a jump to the economy of a country” and contrast structures beginning “But as of now.” Most of the meaning remains clear, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical problems are noticeable, however: “Subject selections … has changed” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “these sort of things” has a number mismatch. The sentence beginning “According to the latest data” also has an awkward comparison structure between the 2025 and 2017 figures. Review agreement, articles and comparative constructions, and check punctuation around longer sentences. More consistently accurate complex sentences would make the argument easier to follow.
